WHO IS NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN?
The quote in today’s clue comes from the last paragraph of British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s address to the House of Commons on September 3, 1939, the day that Britain declared war on Nazi Germany. Here is the full sentence: “Everything that I have worked for, everything that I have hoped for, everything that I believed in during my public life, has crashed into ruins.” The Avalon Project has the full transcript.
On the same day, Chamberlain also announced the news that “This country is at war with Germany”, to the general public after Hitler ignored the deadline Britain set for the Germans to get out of Poland. This BBC article covers the immediate effects of that announcement.
Fernando bet $615 and finished with $5,615.
Elizabeth bet $1,401, bringing her up to $10,001.
Cris bet $8,221 and won the game with $37,821. His 9-day total is $313,323. Outstanding!

For some reason or another, I didn’t think of Neville Chamberlain for FJ. Instead, I picked Pope Pius XII although I knew that the pope did virtually nothing to stop the war.
I said Charles De Gaulle, so, I’m in the same boat.
I got a kick out of the reactions Cris had to missing a couple of clues today. (On both, the right answer came to him right after he was ruled against.) It struck me funny because I’d probably react the same way and also because he generally wears his p-p-p-poker face.
One was the pouffy hairstyle TS and the other was Idina Menzel’s “Rent” clue (Elizabeth got it).
