WHAT ARE U-BOATS?

U-boat is the English form of Uboot or U-Boot, the short form of Unterseeboot (undersea boat), the German word for submarine. Human U-boats was a slang expression applied to Jewish people who stayed in Berlin during World War II. It’s one term that has not yet made make it into the Holocaust Glossary.

In 2020, the Museum of Jewish History featured the story of Annelies Bernstein Herz, as told on “Those Who Were There: Voices from the Holocaust.” Annelies and her twin sister, Marianne, were among 1,700 German Jews known as “U-boats” who were able to survive the Holocaust in Berlin by posing as non-Jews. Human U-boats did whatever it took to stay under the radar, as it were, and evade state surveillance.

Curtis wrote down IDK. He lost $799 and finished with $6,001.

James went with moles. That cost him $4,400 and left him with $3,200.

Lisa had no response to the clue. She sent her love to Kai. Lisa didn’t bet a pfennig. She won the game with the $17,600 she already had.

I got a big kick out of that paint brand clue and the Irish-American kid on the logo. I won a prize for Cutest Costume when I was 8 dressed as that kid. I had a bob haircut and same color hair and am part Irish descent. They thought I was a boy.

That World Heritage clue was reminiscent of an FJ from, if I recall, 2 seasons ago, about a hill in Italy that was 30 miles or somewhat from some other place. It was arcane enough that I couldn’t find the correct response looking on Wikipedia. And Buzzy Cohen is no longer a credited writer, so I don’t know who wrote that over-clever, over-cute clue.

TL;DR The phrase “Galapagos of the Indian Ocean” is novel to me, this day.

Nice comeback from the depths of despair for the guys, but this was Lisa’s game to lose

I did well in round one, including that cinch DD, and crashed and burned all the way through the second. Final was also a stumper; I thought it might be moles or gophers.

Surprised no one knew the power charger clue, and especially the area above the hips/garbage collector’s milieu. One would think that someone would have known what a Big Mac is. Maybe they’re all vegetarians. (Which leads me to ask, if vegetarians eat only vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?)

    • VJ says:

Curtis did reply on the Big Mac clue with hamburger. Then he looked genuinely perplexed as to why that was wrong. Then James buzzed in . It looked like he was also going to say hamburger, but he hesitantly got out sandwich instead.

Congratulations to Lisa in becoming our new Jeopardy champion! Well, it was another exciting game, but that FJ was a real bummer.

  5. Travis says:

Wow that final was super hard, and I still don’t understand the World Heritage daily… Galapagos is in the Pacific. Maybe I’m not reading it right.
