Final Jeopardy: Inventors (1-30-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/30/2015), in the category “Inventors” was:

In 1702 Thomas Savery wrote of one of his designs, “such an engine will do the work or labour of ten or twelve” these.

New champ Karen Ash won $23,600 yesterday. In the last game of the week, she takes on these two players: Cate Hollenbeck, from Los Angeles, CA; and Jim Read, from Arroyo Grande, CA.

Round 1: Karen found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Books About Presidents” under the $800 clue. She was in a $1,200 tie for the lead with Jim. Cate had not yet buzzed in. She made it a true Daily Double and thought it was “Five Hundred”. That was WRONG.

Arthur Schlesinger Jr.’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the JFK Administration is called this many “Days.” show

Cate finished in the lead with $5,200. Karen was second with $4,800 and Jim was last with $4,600.

Round 2: Cate found the first Daily Double in “Guilty” under the $2,000 clue. She was in second place with $11,200, $3,600 less than Karen’s lead. She bet $2,500 and wouldn’t take a guess so she was WRONG.

His 1982 “not guilty by reason of insanity” verdict led some states to pass laws that allowed “guilty but mentally ill”. show

Jim found the last Daily Double in “Don’t Be a Dumas” under the $2,000 clue. In third place with $8,600, he had $7,400 less than Karen’s lead. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

In 1717 it was Bastille Day for this 1-named author who’d do 11 months for satirical verses against the Govt. show

Karen finished in the lead with $16,000. Jim was next with $12,800 and Cate was in third place with $11,900.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE HORSES?

The quote comes from Thomas Savery’s book “The Miner’s Friend” (1702), and you can see it on google books. There must be different editions of the book because other versions of the quote are online. HigherLearning.com has an article called “Forget Everything You Thought You Knew About Horsepower” that credits Thomas Savery with the initial use of equating horses with power, and that would seem to be explain why many articles that give James Watt credit for the term say that he “adopted” it.

Cate wrote down steam engine. She lost her $5,501 bet and finished with $6,399.

Jim decided it was men. That cost him $12,795 and he wound up with $5 bucks.

Karen got it right. Her $10,000 bet brought her up to a winning total of $26,000 today and a 2-day total of $49,600. Go, Karen! Once again, she was flying solo with the right FJ answer, but this match was no runaway– she certainly had some worthy competition!

FJ Results: 1-30-15

Now Karen gets to take a 2-week break. The Teachers’ Tournament begins on Monday and we won’t see the champ again until Monday, February 16th. the next two weeks.

During today’s chat, Karen talked about her love of making ice cream and her favorite flavor, chocolate malt. “Just give me some eggs and milk,” she said, “and I’ll make you some ice cream.”

I thought FJ was Circes as well. Nonetheless a job well done. My wife and I were rooting for you and hoped to continue watching you win with your warm, disarming style. Get ’em next time!!

  2. Karen Ash says:

In my entire coughcough years of life, I have never heard the 1,000 days of JFK as a set idiom. Anne of 1,000 Days? No problem. 1,001 Arabian Nights? Close enough.

But hey, that’s what makes trivia trivia – one man’s DUH is another man’s new fun factoid.

    Custom ice cream for all!

Great game, Karen! I bet you didn’t think when you were writing down “horses” that you would be the only one to get it.

Make my virtual cone Cherry Vanilla 🙂

Karen, I’m the resident crank here and I can’t find a single negative thing to say about you!

Not only do you know how to play the game, you don’t have any of the obnoxious habits some contestants have that can irritate old cranks.

When I saw today’s FJ, I thought, “Wow, that’s easy. They’ll all three get it for sure.”

But no. I knew you would, and you did, but didn’t you want to roll your eyes at those other answers?

At that point, you might have been wanting more challenging competitors. Of course, with so much money involved, maybe not …

I’m looking forward to your return, but first we have to sit through that goofy Teachers Tournament. Here comes my crankiness, but I’ve found over the years that some of the dumbest players show up in the Teachers Tournament, and I say that as an ex-teacher myself.

I’m always curious about categories like tonight’s “pizza, etc.” set in Gino’s East. Anyone know if they pay Jeopardy for this?

see? cate made the same mistake as i did, misreading the clue, thinking they were asking for the steam engine!!

congrats karen, just one big dark spot: kennedy, 500 days. “the 1000 days of kennedy” are almost as well known as “the 100 days of napoleon”. for some even more, since they might not have much idea about bonaparte. those aphorisms are cited almost everytime when people talk about jfk or napoleon. that was a rather big hiccup, esp since it was a dd and one could think about it without being pressured by the other 2 players.

anyway, we close the week with 5/15….. and today – having made the same mistake as cate – cured me of my optimism in fj once and for all.

  5. jacob ska says:

Wow, what a match. Only 2 ts and only 4 total incorrect responses excluding fj. I agree with Alex when he stated “Best start we’ve had all week.”

These 3 were superb until fj. Congrats Karen! Fellow NYer.

Btw, John it appears you weren’t the only one to
misread fj. Cate wrote what you initially went for over in Spoiler Talk CotD this morning.

Total Responses per player (excluding fj)
    Karen – 19 correct, 2 incorrect
    Jim – 18 correct, 2 incorrect
    Cate – 16 correct, 1 incorrect

This is a “must see” game for all Fikkle Famers. Thoroughly enjoyed watching.

    • VJ says:

Yes, it was a great game and John and Cate were not alone — my son was kicking himself for misreading the clue the steam engine way too.

      • john blahuta says:

@VJ and jacob, makes me feel a little better….

      • jacob ska says:

        😀

The mind is amazing. It will take you in a direction that will make you wonder how you got there!

      • Tom Clark says:

I don’t think it was necessarily misread. 1702 is way too early for it, but it’s possible someone post-steam engine could have said he’s working on an engine that would do the work of ten or twelve steam engines.
