NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) is a Nimitz-class, nuclear-powered supercarrier, the ninth in a series of 10 in the service of the U.S. Navy. Launched in March 2001, she was christened by Nancy Reagan. On her website, it says: “USS RONALD REAGAN is one of America’s most visible symbols of resolve and lethal instruments of war…. We will promote peace through strength, and should deterrence fail, be always ready to fight and win in combat.” Click here for more on Ronald Reagan and “peace through strength.”
About the 10th one (from 2011): VIRGIN BERTHS ($400) On March 15, 2006 the George H.W. Bush was launched as the 10th & final ship in the Nimitz class of these
Kevin went with MLK. He lost his $1,200 bet, leaving him with $4,000.
Maggie thought it was JFK. She didn’t bet anything so she stayed at $7,200.
Jonathan wrote down “Wilson.” He didn’t bet anything either– he already was the new Jeopardy! champ.
2 triple stumpers from the last round:

Shocked no one got FJ. I thought History was meant to be easy. I hope we can finally stop the 1-day curse tomorrow.
And maybe get a returning champion to be in the lead going into Final Jeopardy!
Ronald Reagan in his debate with Walter Mondale said that Mondale’s youth and inexperience should not be held against him. Reagan was very prophetic because the three young people got the FJ wrong. I, on the other hand, at 51 years of age saw the entire debate on tv and knew the answer to FJ.
If only I could get on the show I could clean up against two 20-somethings.
@Albert
AsI said before, this was not a generation thing imo. Everybody knows who FDR was, no?? Even a 20 year olds w/o history knowledge. FDR won WWII (with Churchill) and Reagan ios largely responsible for the demise of the USSR. This should, no actually is imo a general knowledge question.
Everybody knows Ronald Reagan but obviously, not everybody associates “peace through strength” with him. By the way, that link I put in the recap says RR got the expression off Barry Goldwater
@VJ
Quite possible. Similar sayings like the Roman “Si vis pacem…” outlast centuries, even millenia.
A very dismal way to start 2019 as it is a Triple Stumper but Jonathan turned the game into a runaway. Why, oh, why did the 1-day curse still continue?!
Jonathan turned the game into a runaway. Who doesn’t hate 1-day carousels, and to quote Alex Trebek a little shade under 2 years ago, ”It’s hard getting a good rhythm going. A good roll following the celebrations for the new year”.
I don’t hate one-day champs. Actually, I like it a lot better than when a superstar comes along and goes on a streak that last more than 5 days.
Share the wealth.
@VJ
Just curious: what’s your take on Ken (Jennings)?
I don’t have one. I never saw his games and I know some people would love to see another run like his, but I’m not one of them.
Exactly. I like it better when 1 player wins 5 or more games too.
Happy New Year to everyone and congrats to Jonathan on his runaway.

We are now well into 2019 and I hope you are all in good shape!!
Congratulations to Jonathan ! Unfortunately the 1 day champ jinx continues, but it is only Jan. 1st, so Jonathan might be able to break it. Since Jackie lost due to unfortunate (to put it mildly) circumstances, we have the 10th champ in as many games, 2 DDs missed again.
@John B./I. How many days consecutive was the last time 1-day curses occur?
7 days.
Congratulations to Jonathan and I have to commend him and Maggie for not betting anything in the final.
@LOU
Well, to Maggie’s credit: once you hit a DD you can’t decline it, but she was smart enough to bet only 1000 and 1200 respectively since they were maybe not their favorite categories. The question though: why did she pick in those categories to begin with?
I think it is smart to hunt for the daily doubles, even if it requires going to a category you are not strong in. Then if you do find a daily double, you can just risk a small amount, and then you take away the possibility of a competitor finding it and possibly doubling their score.
In any case, I’m guessing she bet small amounts because she is as risk averse as the average contestant, rather than on fear of a category (Middle C, for example, is so vague it’s hard to determine how likely you are to know the answer, compared to any other category).
