Eagles Re-Sign Michael Vick to One Year Deal

When the Philadelphia Eagles closed out their 2012 season with a 4-12 record, there was widespread speculation that the Eagles would part company with coach Andy Reid and quarterback Michael Vick, among others.  Reid did get the ax, though he promptly was hired as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.  The Eagles then hired Chip Kelly as their new head coach.  Kelly spent the last several years building the University of Oregon’s football team into a national powerhouse, and his teams featured a high octane offense with a lot of speed guys.

It appears Kelly decided he’d like to see if Vick is a good fit for his offense.  The team announced February 11th that they re-signed the quarterback to a restructured contract for one year.  He’ll then be a free agent following the 2013 season.  Vick isn’t guaranteed the starting job and will have to compete with second year man Nick Foles and anyone else Kelly brings into camp.

We see this as a smart move.  Vick is a running quarterback who could fit in well with an up tempo offense that we assume Kelly will run, and a one year deal is a relatively low risk high reward situation for the Eagles.  Kelly and company will have to find some blockers for whoever the QB is in 2013, as the offensive line needs an overhaul.
