Cubs Pitcher Gets Hurt Taking His Pants Off; Phillies Fan Injured by Cannon Fired Hot Dog

Well, it’s been a wacky week so far in baseball. On June 20th, the Chicago Cubs placed closer Brandon Morrow on the Disabled List, retroactive to June 18th. Morrow, who has 16 saves this season and a 1.59 ERA in 26 appearances, was taking his pants off at home in the wee hours of June 18th after returning from a weekend road trip to St. Louis when he felt back spasms. While missing time due to back spasms is not uncommon in baseball, we don’t recall a player landing on the DL for pants removing induced back spasms. Cubs manager Joe Maddon will look at matchups and do a closer by committee approach while Morrow recovers.

Meanwhile in Philadelphia at the Phillies vs. St. Louis Cardinals game on June 18th, a fan was hit in the face by a duct tape wrapped hot dog fired from a cannon. The Phillies have been firing these hot dogs (wrapped in duct tape to keep them together) for years, but this one happened to hit fan Kathy McVay in the face, knocking her glasses off, giving her a black eye and facial injuries. McVay, (who has a bad shoulder requiring surgery, and thus could not defend herself against the airborne sausage missile) was given a CT scan to check for a concussion.

The common element in both of these incidents is the St. Louis Cardinals. Have at it, conspiracy theorists.
