Cardinals Set Record with Four Consecutive Home Runs in 1st Inning of 7-6 Victory Over Phillies
The St. Louis Cardinals tied one major league record and broke another in their 7-6 victory over the Phillies in Philadelphia on July 2nd. In the first inning–and with two outs–Nolan Arenado hit a two run home run. That was followed by a home run by Nolan Gorman, which was followed by a home run by Juan Yepez, which was followed by a home run by Dylan Carson. This four consecutive home run sequence was the 11th in major league history, but it was the first time it had been done in the 1st inning.
All the home runs were off Phillies starter Kyle Gibson. He settled down for a while after that, before allowing a run in the fifth inning (without benefit of a home run). The Phillies had tied the score at 5-5 after scoring two in the 2nd inning and three in the 3rd. Philadelphia tied it at 6-6 with run in the sixth inning, It stayed that way until Arenado hit his second home run of the game in the top of the ninth, off reliever Seranthony Dominguez, in what proved to be the winning run in the 7-6 Cardinals victory. Arenado is liking the Phillies pitching in this series; he hit for the cycle on July 1st , although the Cardinals lost that game.
