Caitlin Clark Breaks Women’s NCAA Basketball Scoring Record

Caitlin Clark came into Iowa’s February 15th game against Michigan in Iowa City needing just eight points to become the all time scoring leader for NCAA women’s basketball. Just two minutes and 12 seconds into the game, Clark broke the record with a three pointer from about 100 yards away. She went on to score 49 points, and added 13 assists as the fourth ranked Hawkeyes beat the Wolverines 106-89.

Women’s college basketball has been slowly, but steadily building a following, but Clark has really put it on the map the last couple of years with sellout crowds in the arenas. Clark, with 3,569 career points, has four more regular season games, the Big 10 tournament, and the NCAA tournament to put some distance between her and second place Kelsey Plum (3,527 points with Washington from 2013-17). Iowa improved to 12-2 in the Big 10 and 23-3 overall. The Hawkeyes trail #2 Ohio State (13-1) in the Big 10 race, and the two will meet in the regular season finale on March 3rd. So, will Clark be a part of the Olympic basketball team at this summer’s Paris Games? Most of the time, players from the WNBA, rather than college, are invited to try out, and at this time Clark hasn’t been invited. She still could be, however, the Olympic team tryouts and practices conflict with the NCAA schedule.
