Baylor Topples Kansas; Creighton Beats Marquette in College Basketball

There were a couple of upsets involving Top 10 teams in college basketball on March 2nd, as we inch closer to tournament time.

In Omaha, #12 Creighton hosted #5 Marquette in a nice Big East matchup. Creighton senior Baylor Scheierman scored 26 points and had 16 rebounds as the Bluejays knocked off the Golden Eagles 89-75. Ryan Kalkbrenner scored 19 and Trey Alexander scored 18 and had 11 assists for Creighton. Kam Jones led Marquette with 23 and David Joplin chipped in 21 points. The Golden Eagles were without last year’s Big East Player of the Year Tyler Kolek for this one. Kolek, who leads the nation in assists at 7.9 per game, is out with an oblique injury. The team’s leading rebounder, forward Oso Ighodaro, missed the game due to illness. Marquette (13-5 in the Big East, 22-7 overall) is second in the conference, 2 ½ games behind UCONN, while Creighton (13-6, 22-8) is right behind at three games back. Marquette hosts #3 UCONN on March 6th.

In Waco, Texas, #15 Baylor hosted #7 Kansas in a battle for third place in the Big 12. Baylor lost at Kansas earlier this season, but they avenged that loss with an 82-74 victory on March 2nd. Four players scored in double figures for Baylor, including Rayj Dennis, who had a double double with 19 points and 10 assists. Baylor (10-6 in the Big 12, 21-8 overall) trails top ranked Houston by three games and #8 Iowa State by two games while Kansas is three back. The Jayhawks share third place with BYU and Texas Tech. Kansas hosts Kansas State on March 6th and will close the regular season at Houston on March 9th.
