Alex Trebek Gives Harvey Levin His Potential Successor Picks

Long-time Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek sat down at his home with TMZ founder Harvey Levin for a whole hour. The episode aired on the FOX News show, “OBJECTified” on July 29, 2018. They talked about many things, including two particular items we have heard about before during Jeopardy! chats:

Alex Trebek's favorite book,

Trebek’s favorite book: Alex told Harvey that he never throws anything out and then he proved it by producing “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë his very first book purchase as a young boarding student at the University of Canada Prep School. Alex said he looked at it and thought “My gosh, this book is leather bound… and it’s only $2.00. I’ve gotta get that book and that was the beginning of, I guess you’d call it, a thirst for knowledge and a love of books.”

Alex Trebek's favorite animal, the muskox

Alex also explained why the muskox is his favorite animal and special in his eyes. “When threatened by wolves,” he said, “they form a circle and all of the calves are inside the circle, fully protected. That’s probably why I love the muskox so much. I see myself as a protector of my family.”

Alex discussed many other aspects of his life and career with Harvey Levin: his childhood, his parents’ divorce, his philanthropy, his stints on other game shows and why, unlike Pat Sajak and Vanna White on “Wheel of Fortune”, he is not “the star” of Jeopardy! Alex firmly believes that the players and the material are the stars of the show. Harvey also wanted to know who would make a good solid host if Alex should decide to hang it up in 2020.

Surprisingly, Alex named names. He said that, not too long ago, he mentioned Alex Faust, “the fellow who does play-by-plays for the Los Angeles Kings,” to his producer as a possible successor. “He’s young, he’s attractive, his first name is Alex. It wouldn’t be a hardship for Johnny Gilbert to say ‘and now here is the host of Jeopardy!, Alex NOT Trebek.'”

When Harvey asked: “What about women?”, Alex suggested CNN legal analyst, Laura Coates: “Very bright, very personable.”

Alex put the odds of renewing his contract in 2020 at 50/50 or less, saying that it depends on whether he is still enjoying what he’s doing and whether he feels that he’s not making too many mistakes. He pointed out that he will be 80 years old in 2020. Levin didn’t point out the irony of Alex worrying about being 80 when Johnny Gilbert will be 96 in 2020.

I would like to see multiple hosts picked from the previous champs. I would like to see on a rotating basis during the year Ken Jennings, buzzy Cohen, Brad Rutter, and even Julia Collins hosting the show.

Johnny Carson did that with the Tonight Show and things worked out really well.

That’s a great idea, Albert. I had a similar idea years ago that they could have various people host a week of games during the summer break (anything but the reruns! ha ha), and then have the viewers vote on it. But I’m rethinking the voting on it aspect now.

P.S — I updated the post to include Alex Faust’s twitter reply

I still think Buzzy might be a potential replacement host for Alex when he retires. Also Ken Jennings might be a good ideal candidate. Or perhaps Julia Collins? What do you think VJ? Thanks for sharing this.

    • VJ says:

You’re welcome, Lou. I’m not going by how well former contestants did on the show. I think the person that they pick has to have a great personality that includes a great sense of humor, and also a unique style. And Buzzy is the only former contestant who fits that bill perfectly imo.

If it can’t be him for some reason, they still need to find someone with those qualities and I don’t understand why Trebek is looking at someone in the world of sports or someone in the world of cable news for the job. You know– like when people say Anderson Cooper. He already has a very lucrative career.

As for Alex himself, he is going to be a hard act to follow but I think he should hang it up. He says during this show that he doesn’t need any more money. Okay, then. Give someone else a shot at the big bucks.

Thanks so much for posting this, VJ. I missed the interview and hope that it is repeated at some point. I still say Buzzy is the one to replace Alex when he retires!

You’re welcome, Rhonda. They put up a whole slew of preview clips over on that link I put in and then they have a much longer one, so I’m assuming that’s the rest of it.

I agree with you on Buzzy. My son votes for Ben Bailey from Cash Cab. Whoever it is, I wonder if Trebek thinks that person is going to host the show as many years as he did.

Anyhow, watch the clips and tell me if you agree that Trebek didn’t seem as spontaneous as he does on the show. It was either like he was weighing what he was going to say carefully or trying to remember what he wanted to say. ha ha ha

P.S. I took an antihistamine yesterday and fell asleep in the middle of this show. I didn’t even know I missed a whole segment because when I woke up, it was picking up after another commercial so I thought I had just dozed off during one commercial. I found out this morning. lol
