#1 Gonzaga Beats #5 Texas and #2 UCLA Beats #4 Villanova in College Basketball
The two top ranked teams in the AP College Basketball Poll hosted highly ranked opponents in a pair of great early season nonconference matchups, and both scored victories.
In Spokane, Washington, #1 Gonzaga hosted #5 Texas. Drew Timme scored a career high 37 points to lead the Bulldogs past the Longhorns 86-74 on November 13th. The Bulldogs (2-0) got off to a fast start and led by 20 at halftime. Texas was able to close within 11 in the second half before Gonzaga put it away for an 18 point victory. Gonzaga, last year’s national runner-up, has now won 53 straight home games, while Texas (1-1) is now 0-12 lifetime against teams ranked #1.
It was a rough day for Texas sports, as the Longhorn football team lost in overtime to Kansas 57-56. The Longhorns, who were 31 point favorites, fell to 4-6 on the season, while Kansas snapped an eight game losing streak and improved to 2-8.
Back on the basketball court, #2 UCLA outscored #4 Villanova 19-10 in overtime to beat the Wildcats 86-77 in Los Angeles on November 12th. The Bruins (2-0) led by two at halftime, but overcame a 2nd half 10 point deficit to send the game into overtime before dispatching the Wildcats (1-1).
