Andre de Grasse of Canada Wins Men’s 200 meters; Americans Kenneth Bednarek an Noah Lyles win Silver and Bronze

Andre de Grasse edged Americans Kenneth Bednarek and Noah Lyles in the men’s 200 meters at the Tokyo Olympics to become the first Canadian to win the event since Percy Williams in the 1928 Amsterdam Games. De Grasse set a Canadian record with a time of 19.62 seconds,

De Grasse won the silver in this event at Rio in 2016, finishing 2nd to Usain Bolt. With the legendary Jamaican sprinter now retired, the field was wide open, though Lyles was considered the favorite. He had to settle for bronze; teammate Kenneth Bednarek took the silver with a time of 19.68. Erriyon Knighton of the U.A. was fourth with a time of 19.93. Knighton is just 17 years old and is someone to keep an eye on in ’24 and ’28. Maybe even ’32.
