WHAT IS HASTY PUDDING?

Nathaniel Eaton was Harvard University’s first headmaster. A strict Puritan with a penchant for beating students and faculty alike, he also had a terrible cook for a wife. When school began in 1639, Easton gave his assistant such an awful beating that he faced charges in court. From the New England Historical Society: “And then the airing of students’ complaints began. It came to light that he routinely whipped his students with 20 to 30 lashes. But the Puritan magistrates, all familiar with the rod, didn’t have much concern about Nathaniel Eaton’s sadistic beatings. They did, however, find Mrs. Eaton’s cooking inexcusable. The students accused her of serving hasty pudding laced with goat dung, which she denied. But she did admit she made bread with sour meal. She also served spoiled fish and never, ever served beef, an Englishman’s birthright. Even worse, she would go for an entire week without serving the students beer….”

That might make you think no one at Harvard would ever want to see hasty pudding ever again but when we fast forward more than a century: Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Club, the oldest collegiate social club in America, was founded on 9/1/1795. It was named for hasty pudding as the members established a tradition of eating a pot of the stuff at each meeting. Later that year, Hasty Pudding Theatricals (aka “The Pudding”) was formed and is the oldest theatrical organization in the USA

Jaclyn came up with figgy pudding. She bet and lost it all.

Jen got it right. She bet it all and doubled her total to $27,200.

Tim was also right. He bet $6,000 and won the game with $28,200. That made Tim Moon the new Jeopardy! champion.

I thought Tim’s bets were way too low on all of his Daily Double wagers. He found all three of them and bet about $6,000 in total. That seems very conservative/shy to me. Although he clearly did enough to win the game.

  2. Rick says:

I never heard of that pudding until now, but it was typically a porridge made of corn meal and milk.

        • VJ says:

On top of that, my brother and I were watching “No Way to Treat a Lady” (Steiger, Segal, Remick) after the show and Steiger did a Maurice Chevalier impression! lol

  4. Lou says:

Tim played an awesome game today especially Jen. Unfortunately Jaclyn couldn’t keep up. Congrats to both Tim and Jen getting final right. I think Tim could build up on his win if he continues. He could get a big payday hopefully. Hasty pudding sounds delicious and I wouldn’t mind using it on ice cream or cake later.
