Mike Moustakas Contributing To Brewers With Both His Bat and Glove
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired third baseman Mike Moustakas in a trade with the Kansas City Royals at the end of July 2018. Moustakas provided another powerful bat in Milwaukee’s lineup that carried the Brewers all the way to Game 7 of the NLCS before succumbing to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Moustakas became a free agent after the season, and remained so all the way to February 19th of 2019, when he resigned with the Brewers after getting no other attractive offers.
After picking up Moustakas last season, the Brewers moved third baseman Travis Shaw over to second base with Moustakas taking over at third. This season, the Brewers wanted Moustakas to play second, with Shaw back at third, even though Moustakas had not played second base in the majors.
It hasn’t been a problem. Moustakas has filled in admirably at second, making plays like this:
With Shaw struggling at the plate this season, Moustakas has pretty much split his time between second and third. He has been a key part of the Brewer’s offense; through games of June 22nd, Moustakas was hitting .281 with 22 homers and 46 RBIs. His homer and RBI numbers were second on the club to Christian Yelich.
All in all, it was a good move by the Brewers to bring back the popular and productive Moose.
