St. Pierre’s Cathedral (St. Peter’s in English) is located in Geneva’s Old Town in Switzerland. It is famed as the church where John Calvin, a founder of Calvinism, gave his mid-16th century sermons. The triangular stool by the pulpit is said to be the very one he sat on. From MySwitzerland.com: “The Catholic cathedral of St. Peter became a Protestant church in 1536. John Calvin preached here from 1536 to 1564, and the cathedral became the guiding center of Protestantism. Like reformers all over Europe, Calvin’s followers stripped Geneva’s cathedral of its altars, statues, paintings and furniture. Only the stained glass windows remained.”
A related clue from 2008: WORLD HISTORY ($1200) In the 1540s John Calvin made this Swiss city a center of Protestant might

Doug got it right. He bet $5,000 and won the game with $30,800. His 3-day total is $52,799, considerably improving his average.

I noticed Maggie was having real problems with the buzzer timing. Maggie was ringing in, but Jeffrey kept beating her with his buzzer timing.
Also, did anybody see the news about how Trebek totally sucked as the moderator for the PA governor’s debate. It seemed like a hot mess for Alex.
Yes, Albert, I saw that about the PA governor’s debate. Not surprising that Trebek’s sense of humor went over like a lead balloon in that venue
Also, I think a lot of people resented a Hollywood big shot moderating the debate in the first place. I live in Wilmington, DE and I can see the point to a degree. When I first heard about Trebek hosting the debate I thought that was very strange. If Trebek were raised in PA or worked in PA as an adult for a while then I could understand, but a Hollywood-type with zero PA connection was not a good idea.
The only way Trebek could have pulled it off is if Trebek showed zero personality and just read the questions from the index cards. No joking. No personal opinions. No commentary. No lecturing.
Trebek will know better next time, if there is a next time anywhere in the country.
I think you meant to say ”Doug kept beating her with his buzzer timing”.
William, did you tell Rudy to stop saying the same phrase everytime you post a Jeopardy! video?
Could anyone explain the “Sweet Caroline” response to the clue about the 2013 Boston bombing?
Hi Marilyn, not being much into sports, I didn’t get that either so I looked it up. Here’s a link to an article that explains it
Thanks, VJ. I love baseball, but did not know about this tradition in Boston. It has been a very exciting year for my Milwaukee Brewers.
@Marilyn
“Sweet Caroline” is usually played at Fenway during the 7th inning stretch. When the Red Sox’ game was delayed on Friday after the Marathon Bombing, Neil Diamond flew to Boston to honor the victims by singing (t)his song at Fenway on Saturday, after he heard that the Saturday game was on, after the suspect was arrested the day before.
Thanks for the info about Neil Diamond.
My pleasure, I am a big fan of his. Too bad that he now is affected by Parkinson’s….
@VJ
I wonder how many links you are going to put up today? I guess there were quite a few triple stumpers?
Wow you’re being overly judgmental considering that you haven’t even seen the game, aren’t you? You can see from the first DD that Doug only had an $1,800 lead when he got that near the end of Round 1. He doubled his score and went on a roll. The ladies could barely get a buzz in after that.
LINK: 12 more clues from the game (not all were triple stumpers)
Doug is a little too Arrogant and definitely flamboyant.
@Richard is right. If he waged a bundle, he would’ve knocked out Jeffrey Schwarz off the ToC, but not enough. If he wins one more and add almost $11,100, he would be a 4-time champion and knock him off the list. But a gutsy True DD and his run on The Cold War proved the ladies STUMPED. Also, the “Calvinist Reformation” is the hint to the FJ clue there.
Set aside, it was a very dramatic game in the NL Wildcard, but Tony Wolters’ HR lifts the Rockies out of it and humiliated the Cubs. I thought the Cubs would’ve walked off, but after that game, they realized Colorado is now their enemy.
Even if he wins only 1 buck tomorrow (but wins the game with the other 2 finishing at zero) he would knock Jeffrey off. 4 games beat 3, regardless of the amount won.
Congratulations to Doug though he needs to win game four if he wants to get ahead of Jeffery schwarz. At least he is improving his wins today despite the poor performance from the ladies. And John and VJ don’t you guys think that the new contestants well in this case the ladies haven’t prepped themselves that well lately? They sometimes make too many random guesses and end up last place. I wonder if they were taking too much time to answer or was it something else?
@Lou
Maggie either misread the clue, overlooking the fact they were asking for a CITY. They even helped with that it is located by a lake OR she has no idea what Alsace is. As for Susan: Finland and Helsinki are pretty much as far from Geneva as can be (except Russia) and Finland is overwhelmingly Lutheran.
Congratulations to JJ! You nailed it again. Congratulations to Doug as well, though his third win does not put him on the ToC list. He is still almost 10 K short of #15, Jeffrey. So Doug needs to win a 4th game.
Poor performance by the ladies.
Hard to say which FJ answer was worse: Alsace is not even a city but a region in southern France. But geographically at least closer than Helsinki, the capital of Finland, being even slightly more northerly than St. Petersburg!!! Not to mention that Finland is over 2/3 Lutheran, the opposite of Calvinism.
That’s why there’s a hint of “Calvinist” in the clue and “lakeside city” that narrows it down.
Not enough to beat Jeffrey Schwarz.
