Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book is about early research with experimental rocket-powered, high-speed aircraft, its test pilots, the NASA space program and astronauts. It was inspired by a 1972 Rolling Stone assignment, leading him to publish a 4-part series on astronauts’ “Post-Orbital Remorse.” Wolfe’s interest in the topic “grew out of some ordinary curiosity,” he says in the book’s foreword, “What is it, I wondered, that makes a man willing to sit on top of an enormous Roman candle…and wait for someone to light the fuse?” The book inspired a 1983 movie with the same name starring Sam Shepard, Scott Glenn and Ed Harris.
The quotes in the clue come from the second chapter (same name as the book), describing how in military flight school, “men were not rated by their outward rank… No, herein, the world was divided into those who had it and those who did not.” Click here to continue with the “hurtling piece of machinery” part in the preview on Google Books.
Carlos wrote down “Cold as Ice”. He lost his $3,500 bet, leaving him $100.
Alison was going for “Brave New World” but only got the first 2 words in. She lost $1,000, dropping her down to $5,800.
Marty got it right. He bet $3,600 so he won this game with $30,200. Nice! His 2-day total is $49,100.
Reversal: “ALT” LEFT ($1200) This type of painted screen seen here was made for a Ghent cathedral – They were going for “altarpiece.” Marty’s “altar screen” got the nod from the judges. Carlos’ “triptych altar” didn’t.
A triple stumper from each round:
RECENT TV ROLES ($1000) He went from “Deadwood” to “American Gods”, where he plays Mr. Wednesday
MOVIE TITLE MATH ($1600) “Gone in ___ Seconds” plus “Assault on Precinct ____”

Congrats to Marty on his second win. A month ago, we had three people with back to back streak of wins for the start of 2018. Do you think we could see it again this month, VJ? A few days ago we had a few small one or two day winners but I hope Marty can keep winning. Plus, what are your favorite Tom Wolfe Books?
@Lou, I don’t know, I don’t even start thinking about a player’s streak til after their 4th game. I don’t have a favorite Tom Wolfe book.

I think his first novel was “The last voyage, the longest, the best” to “Look Homeward, Angel”.
Since I am heading to China for the next three weeks, I might miss out on the next few weeks of jeopardy, but if you would VJ, please keep me informed if Marty wins again on this site once I get to my destination, thanks. Plus if I can find wifi it would be at a relative’s house so I will look forward to hearing from you then. Thank you very much.
Hope you have a great trip, Lou 🙂
