Final Jeopardy: Movie History (10-12-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/12/2017) in the category “Movie History” was:

A 1947 FBI study chided this holiday film’s “attempt to discredit bankers… a common trick used by Communists”

12x champ Austin Rogers has now won $411,000. In Game 13, his challengers are: Sean Chong, from Silver Spring, MD; and Scarlett Sims, from Oak Ridge, TN.

In his intro, Alex remarked that only 4 people in the entire history of Jeopardy! have won more games and more money than Austin and wished the players good luck with “you’re gonna need it.”

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE”?

According to OpenCulture.com, Russian-born writer Ayn Rand and her associates had a lot to do with the FBI’s investigation and report on the film industry during the “Red Scare” years. You can see an image of the report there, in which a redacted source “stated in substance that the film represented a rather obvious attempt to discredit bankers by casting Lionel Barrymore as a ‘scrooge-type’ so that he would be the most hated man in the picture. This, according to these sources, is a common trick used by Communists.” BillMoyers.com has info on how the film was defended against these insinuations before the House Un-American Activities Committee, noting that it went on to become a perennial holiday favorite.

Sean wrote down “Miracle on 51st Street.” He lost his $1,800 bet and had $1,000 left.

Austin got it right. He bet $16,550, bringing him up to $33,150.

Scarlett got it, too. She bet $12,001 and won the match with $33,201. Congrats on a great game there, Scarlett. Austin was just as overjoyed as she was that she won and they turned and high-fived each other. Alex said we will be seeing Austin in the ToC, which begins about 3 weeks from now.

Wow Austin lost? Holy cow couldn’t watch because of football. Too bad really enjoyed watching the run he was on.

  2. Mike McCarthy says:

Was the mime an umpire checking a baseball and throwing it back into play?

  3. Becci says:

Austin is on The Tonight Show tonight.

  4. Becci says:

I didn’t watch the show, but did Austin lose on purpose so he could compete in the TOC?

  5. Thad says:

I refuse to accept the result.

  6. Lou says:

Well, Austin had a great run so I guess Seth Wilson was proud to know that he will have great competition with Austin in the toc. Congrats to Scarlett on her first win. Also it’s a wonderful life is a great Christmas movie but I remember there was a similar pixar movie with scrooge in it, do you remember the title of it, VJ? It aired back in 2013 or 2014. Also Austin won’t have to worry about working as a bartender no more.

    • Lou says:

I meant to say 2009 movie not 2013. my mistake. It was that movie A Christmas Carol 2009 pixar movie featuring scrooge, Vj. Do you remember that one? As I was saying, that stay at home mom could be our next streaker if she continues playing like this. And I hope Austin will be watching this tomorrow.

    • VJ says:

Well, Austin did manage to get the lead for a little bit there. I actually didn’t want him to beat Matt Jackson’s $$, idk why.

@Lou, I’m blanking out on the movie– maybe I didn’t see it. There’s a ton of articles online about Austin. I saw one where he said he’s going to keep bartending for a while because he loves it. Also I saw one yesterday where the Canadian writer was claiming that Trebek really can’t stand Austin. When Trebek heard about it, he said he was going to be polite because she was a fellow Canadian and said that wasn’t the case. His response is in the article after the video. Almost made me wish she wasn’t Canadian so I could see what he had to say when he wasn’t being polite. LOL!

The category title “the end is near”, lol. For the first time, he looked a little nervous when he was trying to catch up to Scarlet. Yeah, the enthusiastic clapping and high five was cute.

        Again, didn’t get his mime.

        • VJ says:

ha ha, Cece, I didn’t even notice the irony of that category name 🙂 Can’t help you with the mime part today. My daughter handed me the electric bill at the beginning of the game. I glanced at it and read it wrong and had a conniption. LOL. It turned out it was really a lot lower than last month’s.

They didn’t show the mime at the end either — they showed the little celebration going on there.

  7. Richard Corliss says:

Scarlett got away with it now that he has minded his own business.

  8. Dalton Higbee says:

Austin was SO CLOSE to beating Dave Madden’s cash winnings record.

    • William Weyser says:

Speaking of SO CLOSE, Austin was SO CLOSE to beating Matt Jackson’s 13-day total. Those lousy $612 got in the way, but great run, Austin.
