TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
The City of Salem, Illinois has a page on its website with a reprint of a June 11, 1925 news item from the Salem Republican about Scope’s indictment for teaching evolution in Dayton, TN. It was on the front page and recalls William Jennings Bryan (one of the prosecutors at the famous trial) delivering the address to the Salem High School Class of 1919 that included Scopes. They also have a page on Bryan who was born in Salem. On it, you will find several items about Bryan that have turned up in Jeopardy! clues.
Sara got it right. Her $5,000 bet brought her up to $14,400.
Eduardo thought it was Clarence Darrow. He lost his $1,795 bet, leaving him with $12,005.
Mary started out with Darrow, but after the first 3 letters, switched to the correct response. She added $4,450 to her score and won the second semi-final spot with $26,650.

Zeke Sevilla, the winner of the 1987 Seniors tournament, was also from Vienna, VA. WOnder if Eduardo is related to him?
The scopes monkey trial for teaching evolution eventually got John scopes arrested in south Carolina. This was eventually censored and was not taught.
Great job by all players though I hope Eduardo gets that wildcard.spot. how long did scopes spend time in prison, VJ?
No time, Lou. He got fined $100, and the case was later overturned. Also, it was in Dayton,Tennessee. One of the clues in the list I linked to in the recap was
BORN & DIED ($2000) A statesman born March 19, 1860 in Salem, Illinois; died July 26, 1925 in Dayton, Tennessee
Nobody got it and Alex told the players that Dayton was the important part of the clue. So when we see Dayton, we’re supposed to see Scopes, Darrow and Bryan. But only if it’s Tennessee.
If it’s Ohio, think Jonathan Dayton, the youngest signer of the Constitution (who was actually from New Jersey)
I was having quite a time getting this up today. The internet was going in and out. Doesn’t happen that much so I guess I can’t complain too much but it’s frustrating all the same.
It was cool that they had a Postage Stamp category today when this was the Quote of the Day: Be like a postage stamp. Stick to one thing until you get there. ~ Josh Billings
