After a 2-month selection process, on 4/9/1959, NASA publicly introduced the astronauts who became known as the Mercury 7. You’ll have to subscribe to Time Magazine if you want to read the “Rendezvous with Destiny” article from the 4/20/1959 issue. They do have a snippet online that begins: “From a nation of 175 million, they stepped forward last week: seven men cut of the same stone as Columbus, Magellan, Daniel Boone, Orville and Wilbur Wright. But there was a difference. Rarely were history’s explorers and discoverers so clearly marked in advance as men of destiny….”

Meike seems like Cindy Stowell from earlier this season. There still hasn’t been a 5+ time champion since Lisa Schlitt in January, a 4 time champion since Rob Liguori in March and a 3 time champion since Grant McSheffrey back in the middle of March. Are we going to have another LONG streak of Final misses by the leaders?

@VJ, thanks. I wasn’t sure. I’ve seen the first Magnificent Seven, starring Yul Brynner, so many times I have the lines memorized. Action packed western movies are my passion.

Alan came this close to being defeated, but luckily that reserve amount saved him. Still a most impressive performance by all the players. Still I must commend Meike for trying but still this was a tough game. lets hope that Alan gets a final jeopardy right tomorrow, don’t you agree VJ?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, idk, Alan’s wunderkind stock slipped a bit for me today. He was getting whupped pretty good there during the game, and was lucky that he had enough $$ to make that DD matter in the Poetry category. I agree that, as you say, he was smart to make a low bet in FJ. 🙂

I was rooting for Meike to win. I loved her story about having 5 dates in 1 day.

        • VJ says:

I was too, Rhonda. Meike, the original speed-dater LOL! I knew you would like her when she knew her dog breeds!

She played a great game all the same, as did Dan.

        • rhonda says:

          Original speed dater, LOL!!
I did enjoy the dog breed category, although I was hoping they’d have one about dachshunds.

Rhonda — don’t know if you visit the Jeopardy site regularly, but the “J6” clue today pertained to dachshunds. Don’t know if it’s still up as I type this.

        • rhonda says:

Thanks so much for telling me, Kevin! I don’t normally visit the site. The clue was still up! Yay for doxies!!

The Seven Samurai? VJ, isn’t that the Japanese movie from which the American movies “The Magnificent Seven” were adapted? The first one starring Yul Brynner & the remake starring Denzel Washington? Just curious.

How quickly our NASA projects are forgotten. When I was in school we had to know MGA for the projects in order…Mercury, Gemini, & Apollo. The Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum has a nice photo titled “The First American Astronauts – Mercury 7.

Not surprised Trebek said to Meike when she revealed Apollo that “this was much sooner.”

For second dd in dj you have two categories listed.

    • VJ says:

Thanks. Hopefully that’s it today. LOL. My computer was misbehaving a lot today but I just cleaned it and restarted.

I love the answer of the Seven Samurai! It would have been a great title for an article (although a bit edgy for Time).
