Final Jeopardy: Famous Americans (6-10-16)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/10/2016) in the category “Famous Americans” was:
Of his greatest accomplishment, he humbly remarked, “Pilots…Take pride in a good landing, not in getting out of the vehicle”
2x champ Hunter Appler has now won $44,601. In the last game of the week, he is up against: Anna Kata, from Hamilton, ONT, Canada; and Rick Doyon, from Somerville, MA.
Round 1 Categories: Basket Weaving – Word Origins – Japanese Cities – Awards – Here’s to 50 Great Years – That’s My Department!
Rick found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Japanese Cities” under the $1,000 clue. There were 7 clues left after it and less than a minute to go. He was in the lead with $3,800, $1,600 more than Hunter in second place. He bet $2,000 and thought it was Osaka. That was WRONG.
This city was home to the royal family for 1,074 years, from the Heian period to the Meiji restoration. show
Hunter finished in the lead with $3,200. Rick was second with $1,800 and Anna was last with $400.
Round 2 Categories: Thespianists – Religious Landmarks – Italian Food – “OO” In The Middle, Sorry – Victorian Verse – Ladies & Gentlemen…The Beetles!
Anna found the first Daily Double in “The Beetles!” under the $800 clue on the 3rd pick of the round. In third place with $800, she had $4,400 less than Hunter’s lead. She bet the $2,000 allowance and thought it was a pharaoh beetle. That was WRONG.
This type of beetle with a biblical name is one of the largest, growing about 5 inches long & weighing 3 1/2 oz. show
Hunter found the last Daily Double in “Victorian Verse” under the $800 clue. He was in second place with $14,400 now, $200 less than Rick’s lead. He bet $1,000 and didn’t have a response so he was WRONG.
This musician character claimed to have a secret charm that he chiefly used “on creatures that do people harm.” show
Rick finished in the lead with $14,600. Hunter was next with $13,400. Anna, at minus $1,200, was out of the game at this point.
Only ONE of the two contestants left in Final Jeopardy! was right.
Many quotation sites have this Neil Armstrong quote. Some include this first sentence: “Pilots take no special joy in walking: pilots like flying.” The only word that was omitted from the sentence in the clue is “generally.” In an interview with author Andrew Chalkin for “A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts”, the Apollo 11 astronaut explained more fully: “The emotional moment was the landing. That was human contact with the moon, the landing…. It was at the time when we landed that we were there, we were in the lunar environment, the lunar gravity. That, in my view, was…the emotional high. And the business of getting down the ladder to me was much less significant.” See It Was All About Landing the Eagle
Hunter wrote down Collins, crossed it out and went with the right answer. He bet $13,399 and finished with $26,799.
Rick thought it was Chesley “Sully” Sullenberg. That cost him his $12,201 bet, leaving him with $2,399.
So Hunter finishes the week as a 3x champ with $71,400. We will see him next Monday and hope we will see you too!
WORD ORIGINS ($800) From a word for “apple”, it’s a bag of aromatic substances placed in a dresser drawer

When talking to a contestant about her 6 toed cat, Trebek mistakenly said the Ernest Hemingway House is in Key Largo when it’s in Key West. I guess Mr. Trebek doesn’t always get his facts right
I guess we have to cut Alex some slack. At his age, Key Largo…Key West…same difference. 🙂
I think you’re getting a little senoritis when you confuse one of those Keys for the Keystone state.
I caught that, too, Judy. When he said Key Largo, I thought of the Humphrey Bogart movie, not 6 toed Hemingway cats.
I was surprised that no one got Bob Newhart in the Awards category, since they gave the first part of his last name. I suppose it was another questions for those of us of a certain age, as VJ so politely says.

I guess the category Victorian Verse is what threw Hunter on that Daily Double, perhaps ruling out the answer as being an older legend. The particular line in the clue is in the Pied Piper poem by Robert Browning
“And I chiefly use my charm
On creatures that do people harm,
The mole, the toad, the newt, the viper;
And people call me the Pied Piper.”
I am going out to a church dinner so I won’t have the clues post till much later.

Sad the canadian did not make it to FJ. Congrats Hunter.
