The Old Man of the Mountain
13 years ago, the Old Man of the Mountain collapsed in Franconia, New Hampshire. A natural rock formation, the Old Man was a well-loved symbol to the residents of the New England State for practically two centuries, and was a huge tourist attraction for out-of-staters as well.
The above video tells the Old Man’s story much better than we can. USA Today has its 2003 report online from when the collapse occurred. They include a quote about the Old Man made by Daniel Webster, N.H. statesman, senator and two-time Secretary of State: “In the mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men.”
