Final Jeopardy: Americana (12-18-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/18/2015) in the category “Americana” was:

While working for a plastics co., Don Featherstone created this iconic lawn decor, basing it on photos in Natl. Geographic.

New champ Claudia Corriere won $7,800 yesterday. Today she takes on these two players: Kiyana Holderbaum, from Long Beach, CA; and Julie Graves, from Houston, TX.

Round 1: Claudia found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Ceremonies” under the $400 clue on the second pick. She was the only one with any money– $200 for giving the right response to the first clue. She bet the $1,000 allowance and she was RIGHT.

WHAT IS A PINK FLAMINGO?

Don Featherstone passed away on June 22, 2015. This is from his NYT obituary that was published the following day: “Mr. Featherstone… was the inventor of the pink plastic flamingo, that flagrant totem of suburban satisfaction and, in later years, postmodern irony. He named it Phoenicopterus ruber plasticus. Less hideous than a garden gnome, more diplomatic than a lawn jockey, the plastic flamingo has been flaunted in front yards by the millions; feted in films, on television and in song; and held up as an object of impassioned pride and equally impassioned prejudice…”

Kiyana bet $4,000 and finished with $10,400.

Julie bet $1,901. That brought her up to $16,201.

Claudia didn’t specify the color of her flamingo but that was acceptable. Her $5,000 bet brought her up to $21,200 and she won the game. Her 2-day total is $29,000. As Claudia revealed in the chat, that is almost as much as her mom won in one game on Jeopardy! back in 2009.

Finally a good game, 3 correct DD’s and a triple solve! I know y’all probably think FJ was too easy, but not for me—Americana, urgh—pink flamingos never crossed my mind as I didn’t know it’s used as lawn decoration (gasp!). I’ve never seen one in a lawn (and if I’ve seen them in movies, I didn’t notice).

Claudia reminds me of Julia Collins; fast on the buzzer, calm demeanor, and just playing the game.

As per J-archive, Carolyn Young from Georgia is probably Claudia’s mom who won $30K on the 2/2/2009 episode.

I put in the link to the game. The second round category from that match “Anna-Grams” was featured on Spoiler Talk back on 10-2-15 (that got mentioned in the comments because there was an Anna Freud clue in both games).

Well, it’s preempted here in the Orlando, FL area for some reason.
