The Final Jeopardy question (12/26/2014), in the category “African Flags” was:

2-day champ Brian Hamilton has won $45,202 so far. He’s going for that elusive third win against these opponents today: Vaughn Winchell, from Columbia, MD; and Amy Williamson, from Hickory, NC.

Round 1: Amy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Foiled” under the $800 clue. She was in third place with $3,200, $2,000 less than Brian’s lead. She bet $2,400 but did not have a guess so she was WRONG.

WHO ARE THE HUTU AND THE TUTSI?

“Once, Hutus and Tutsis lived in harmony in Central Africa…. Even in the colonial era — when Belgium ruled the area, after taking it from Germany in 1916 — the two groups lived as one, speaking the same language, intermarrying, and obeying a nearly godlike Tutsi king.

“Independence changed everything. The monarchy was dissolved and Belgian troops withdrawn — a power vacuum both Tutsis and Hutus fought to fill. Two new countries emerged in 1962 — Rwanda, dominated by the Hutus, and Burundi by the Tutsis — and the ethnic fighting flared on and off in the following decades. It exploded in 1994…” (CNN: Hutu-Tutsi Conflict)

Brian added $2,799 to finished with $5,599.

Amy bet $1,999 and finished with $9,599.

Vaughn racked up another $3,500 with his FJ bet and won the game with $22,500. So he will be the returning champ on Monday.

VJ, after that video clip you put up yesterday, Heather is never gonna live that one down 🙂

    • VJ says:

oh dear, it really was not my intent to embarrass her — I only put it up because the show was preempted for some people.

But thanks for pointing that out. I will make the usual image and replace the video with that next week.

    • Eric S says:

I’m going to disagree, Cece (not to pick on you, but I simply don’t read all of the postings): “never gonna live that one down” seems a little harsh. I think her answer, although flawed, showed a glimpse of the right track (letter w/ two lines), whereas the answer “NATO” showed neither.

After last night these three contestants have restored my faith in mankind. Vaughn was smoking on all cylinders.

@John, what were you saying last night about Americans not knowing about international news?

    • john blahuta says:

sometimes even a blind acorn finds a squirrel…:):)
but seriously, an encouraging result. on average though…..just watch some 20 shows and then let’s talk again…

  3. jacob ska says:

See, vj, told you my daughters who are about the age of Brian knew the answer right away. I should have went with them for my prediction instead of saying none would get fj. But, on the positive side we finally got a fj triple solve. Hurray!!

    • john blahuta says:

and jacob, remember when i said we get a triple solve when we least expect it???
funny though, that just shortly i mentioned DREYFUS when surinam was the fj answer.(papillon etc…) amazing how you don’t mention or think of a name in decades, and all of a sudden it pops up several times in the span of a few days!!

and the 2 day jinx strikes again….

      • john blahuta says:

and imo the naming of the fj category was a “knuckleball” or “curveball” if you will. “african tribes” or african population/tribes” would have been more exact. since it was a runaway it fortunately did not matter…..

      • William Weyser says:

Are these are apparently scared of the 3rd win? For my 5th Tournament Of Champions, I have been stuck at 6 for about a month or 2, and those 6 participants are Teen Champion Jeff Xie with $75,000, 3-time champion Bill Cossen with $50,602, 4-time champion Catherine Hardee with $95,201, 3-time champion Alexander Persaud with $61,000, 3-time champion Ryan Alley with $56,800 and Kids Week Winner Zane Ice though I gave him additional $25,000 to his winnings which are now up to $54,203. Am I ever gonna get a 7th participant in the tournament or do this people just want me to quit the TOC?

    • VJ says:

LOL. I think I’ve got the prediction rhythm down now … whatever we say, it’s the opposite.

      • jacob ska says:

True. I was very impressed with these contestants. Really sharp throughout the game in spite of risky DD wager.

        • john blahuta says:

yes, but even with a 12 K swing brian would not have won. it would not have been a runaway (brian 14.800,vaughn 19 K, but i am sure vaughn would have bet the necessary 10.601…

you have to admit jacob, that – going back to americans and international etc.. that today was the exception of the rule. i am glad it was and wish it would happen more often, let’s just go back to the vertical international symbol!

        • jacob ska says:

John, please don’t take me back to that vertical/horizontal fiasco. I woke up this morning with it on my mind. At some point in time I hope to get over it. It’s like a nightmare that won’t go away.

Btw, vj thanks for putting up the clip yesterday. That was really unbelievable.
