Donald Sterling Apologizes for His Remarks, Then Trashes Magic Johnson
Donald Sterling, embattled owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, sat down for an interview with Anderson Cooper of CNN to get out the word that he was sorry for his racist remarks recorded by his friend V. Stiviano that led to his lifetime banishment from the NBA, and the likely forced sale of the team. Sterling apologized profusely and insisted he’s not racist and that he was essentially set up by (now probably former friend) Stiviano, admitting he did not know the conversation was being recorded.
There isn’t much Sterling can do other than apologize, but then he dug himself a deeper hole by trashing Magic Johnson, saying the former Lakers All-Star, who as everyone knows is HIV positive, is a “bad example” for kids. He also said Johnson hasn’t done anything to help the African American community.
Johnson responded that he’d rather talk about the NBA Playoffs and not about Donald Sterling. NBA commissioner Adam Silver apologized to Johnson on behalf of the NBA and reminded everyone that the league is in the process of dealing with the Sterling situation. Perhaps the next time Sterling talks to the media, he might consider going through a spokesman who can screen his comments first.
