Final Jeopardy: 2013 Obituaries (1-8-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/8/2014), in the category “2013 Obituaries” was:

She was called a “savior”, a heartless tyrant”, a “trailblazer”, “intimidating” & a “real toughie.”

New champ Andrew Nelson won $12,000 in yesterday’s game. Today he takes on these two challengers: Julia Dye, from North Hills, CA; and Dinu Nesan, from Toronto, ON, CA.

Julia found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Fictional Witches” under the $800 clue. She was in second place with $2,600, $3,200 less than Dinu’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

In “The Thirteenth Sacrifice,” witches have returned to this city and Boston cop Samantha Ryan is hunting them. show

Dinu finished in the lead with $5,800. Julia was second with $3,800 and Andrew was last with $2,600.

Andrew found the first Daily Double in “Maine Stays,” under the $1,600 clue. So far, he was knocking it out of the park in this category. He was now in second place with $5,000, $800 less than Dinu in the lead. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

This historian went to Colby College in Waterville. She later met & married Richard Goodwin, advisor to JKF and LBJ. show

Dinu found the last Daily Double in “The Original T-Paine” under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $9,800, he had $800 more than Andrew in second place. He only bet $100, much to his chagrin when he saw the clue. Yes, he knew it so he was RIGHT.

Paine was elected to France’s Natl. Convention in 1792 but was imprisoned in 1793 after opposing this king’s execution. show

Dinu finished in the lead with $9,900. Andrew was next with $9,000 and Julia was in third place with $8,200.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS MARGARET THATCHER?

“Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher was Britain’s first female prime minister. One of the dominant political figures of 20th century Britain, she served three consecutive terms in office. According to her BBC bio, “Thatcherism” continues to have a huge influence. When she passed away on April 8, 2013, she was called all those things in the clue in an obituary article by Gregory Katz and Robert Barr for the Associated Press.

Julia got it right. Her $1,701 bet brought her up to $9,901.

Andrew just had a big question mark. He lost $7,401 and finished with $1,599.

Dinu got it right and added $8,101, to win the match with $18,001, making him the new champ.

Today’s FJ bet was whoever had the lead at the end of Double Jeopardy! would win because we thought all the contestants would get this one. It turned out that way anyhow.

Who objected to Joseph being killed. I think the answer was wrong when Alex said Jacob

They wanted the father in this clue, not the brother who objected — they gave that brother’s name in the clue:

Reuben was the only one of this man’s sons to object to killing Joseph, whom he suggested tossing into a pit

    again, an easy (international) fj……
thatcher was with churchill maybe the most influental pm. (funny how women had the most influence in england, later gb and now the uk: elizabeth I, victoria, elizabeth II).
on the risk of sounding presumptuous: but shame on andrew, this was a no brainer. or one would think. he would have lost anyway, but…..

    • vj says:

yeah, Andrew would have lost even if he hadn’t thrown away his lead. Still I must say I was truly impressed when he got Franklin Pierce right in the Maine Stays category, and doubly so when he got that Daily Double.

      • john blahuta says:

no, i meant he would have lost even if he had gotten fj right, BECAUSE he threw away his lead. and yes i was impressed too: another example for being TOPS in one area and then….

idk. I knew Franklin Pierce, knew he went to same school as Hawthorne and Longfellow, but I didn’t know that Maine Stays DD.

As for FJ, all the descriptions indicate a strong leader. Meryl Streep won Best Actress for Iron Lady a couple of years ago. Too bad he couldn’t have connected it with that.
