Torrey Smith Stars in Raven’s Victory While Dealing with Tragedy
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith caught six passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns in Baltimore’s 31-30 victory over the New England Patriots on September 23rd. A fine performance, but what makes it amazing is the fact that Smith was dealing with the death of his 19 year old brother, who died in a motorcycle accident the day before.
Smith’s brother, Tevin Jones, died when his motorcycle hit a utility pole in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Jones was wearing a helmet and alcohol was not a factor. The Ravens were prepared to be without Smith for the Sunday night game, but late in the afternoon, he decided to play. He admitted that playing helped him deal with the situation. His great performance was somewhat reminiscent of former quarterback Brett Favre’s response to the death of his father the day before a December 2003 Monday Night Football game between the Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders. Favre decided to play in the game and had an inspired and emotional performance, passing for 399 yards and four touchdowns in the Packers’ victory.
Our condolences to Torrey Smith and his family, and our congratulations on a fine performance under trying circumstances.
