Anderson Cooper Amy Winehouse Special

On Monday, Anderson Cooper will air his pre-taped interview with Amy Winehouse’s family as her father expands upon his theory that detoxing killed his daughter. When he says the “Back to Black” singer’s family is “breaking their silence for the first time,” Anderson means on TV.

Amy Winehouse’s father has talked to the press before about his theory that Amy suffered a seizure caused by alcohol detoxification. Mitch Winehouse told Coopeer, “She had a series of seizures brought on by this binge drinking and then stopping to drink.”

He also claimed that Winehouse was drug-free for three years. “Everyone thought I was in denial, I wasn’t in denial, she hadn’t taken drugs. She’d been clean for round about three years.” So drugs were no longer a problem, according to Mitch, but “Her problem was alcohol, the last few years of her life.”

“You might argue, what’s the difference? The difference is that what happened to Amy wasn’t anything to do with drugs,” Mitch says, while conceding that all the past drug abuse may have taken a toll.

The main thrust must be to make it very clear that Amy Winehouse was not using any kind of substance illegally obtained, because he does acknowledge that traces of the prescription drug Librium were found in Amy’s body, which was prescribed to help her detox safely. According to Mitch, Librium reduces the possibility of seizures and she was taking it everyday.

And drinking too?
