England and Argentina Advance to World Cup Semifinals

Jude Bellingham scored in the third minute of extra time and England ended Norway’s surprising World Cup run with a 2-1 victory in a quarterfinal match on July 11th in Miami. Bellingham also scored England’s first goal late in the first half. England held Norway’s Erling Haaland scoreless for the 1st time in the tournament. Haaland had scored seven goals in his previous games.

In the other quarterfinal played on July 11th, defending champion Argentina advanced with a 3-1 win over Switzerland in Kansas City. Alexis MacAllister scored for Argentina at the 10 minute mark of the 1st half. That goal came after a corner kick by Lionel Messi. Messi had an assist on the play, but did not score a goal in the game, ending his nine game World Cup scoring streak. Julian Alvarez scored the game winner at 112 minutes, and Lautaro Martinez scored an insurance goal nearly at the end of extra time.

The semifinals are now set. France will play Spain on July 14th in Arlington, Texas, and England will play Argentina on July 15th in Atlanta.
