WHO ARE WINSTON CHURCHILL & MARGARET THATCHER?

Big Ben is the nickname of the Great Clock of Westminster’s Great Bell, although most refer to the whole structure by that name. The quarter bells chime every 15 minutes and the Great Bell chimes every hour alongside the quarter bells. When Sir Winston Churchill died in 1965, Big Ben was silenced at 9:45 a.m. as his funeral began and remained so for the rest of the day. 48 years later, the same honor was accorded to Baroness Marrgaret Thatcher during her funeral. These were fitting tributes for the Prime Ministers known as “The British Bulldog” and “The Iron Lady”.

Naturally, your curious recapper wanted to know when Big Ben’s chimes were silenced for royals, as the clue sort of implies. Londonist published a list of all the times they were silenced from 1859 through 2007. Churchill is on the list but not a single royal. That’s because there is a tradition of tolling the Great Bell for every year of a monarch’s life. It began in 1910 with the passing of Edward VII, age 68. The great bell tolled 70 times for George V, and 56 times for George VI. The record so far is 96 times for Elizabeth II. Edward VIII, who abdicated in 1936 and became the Duke of Windsor, had no state funeral.

Erin only had Churchill. She lost $4,000 and finished with $800.

Matt must have missed the “non” part of the clue. He had the 2 Queen Elizabeths. He lost $4,599 and had $401 left.

Adam had no response. He lost his $5,000 bet but won the game with $20,000. Adam Remson is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Erin was half correct on this triple stumper. It’s been a rough week for FJ! Only 2 out of 15 correct responses in Final this week. Hopefully next week’s Finals will be easier.
