Final Jeopardy: 19 Century Lit (11-4-24)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/4/2024) in the category “19 Century Lit” was:
All introduced in the same chapter of a novel, Grimaud, Mousqueton & Bazin are the servants of these men
2x champ Greg Jolin, a system specialist & accountant from Raymond, NH, scooped up $50,002 last week. In Game 3, he is up against: Lindsey Simmons, an attorney orig. from Marshall, MO; and Brian Frey, a journeyman orig. from Syosset, NY.

Brian found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Quotable Oscar Wilde” under the $800 on the 9th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,000, $400 more than Greg in second place. Brian made it a true Daily Double but drew a blank so he was WRONG.
This watery site “must be one of the earliest, if not the keenest, disappointments in American married life” show
Greg finished in the lead with $7,800. Brian was second with $2,600 and Lindsey was last with negative $1,200. A reversal (see below) got Lindsey out of the red. She went into Double Jeopardy! with $400. All clues were shown.
Round 2 Categories: World Flags – Don’t Do the Math – Health & Medicine – Epics – The Odyssey – The “NE” Add
Brian found the first Daily Double in “World Flags” under the $1,200 clue on the 5th pick of the round. He was in second place with $3,000, $6,000 less than Greg’s lead. Brian made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Brian found the last Daily Double in “Epics” under the $1,600 clue on the 13th pick of the round. He was in second place with $6,000, $4,600 less than Greg’s lead. Brian bet $5,000 and said “Black Beauty.” That was WRONG.

Greg finished in the lead with a runaway $19,000. Lindsey was second with $5,600 and Brian was last with $3,800. All clues were shown.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHO ARE THE THREE MUSKETEERS?
(Athos, Porthos & Aramis)
Grimaud, Mousqueton & Bazin are described in detail in Chapter 7 of “The Three Musketeers” (1844) by Alexandre Dumas. In French, they are called “valets”; in this English translation, they are called “lackeys”. I like valets better.
Grimaud was Athos’ valet. He was very fearful of Athos, who was an abusive master. Mousqueton, a Norman originally named Boniface, was Porthos’ valet. Aramis’ valet Bazin was from the province of Berry. He is described as “dumb, blind, and deaf, and of unimpeachable fidelity.” How Planchet came to be d’Artagnan’s valet is also described in Chapter 7. The epilogue tells what happens to all of them.
Brian got it right. He bet $3,799 and finished with $7,599.
Lindsey crossed out Musketeers in favor of a shoutout to her own musketeers (Jace, Benji & Elle). She lost her $2,201 bet and finished with $3,399.
Greg also got it right. He bet $6,000 and won the game with $25,000. Greg’s 3-day total is $75,002.
Reversal: ($800) It’s the only U.S. state capital that fits the category – Ken rejected Boise, Idaho from Lindsey and accepted Baton Rouge from Greg. The judges gave Lindsey’s response the green light.
A triple stumper from each round. (Please don’t put the answers in the comments)
THE ODYSSEY ($1200) A blurb on the back of his 1999 memoir says he “jetboated up the Ganges from the ocean to the sky”
($2000) The 1609 shipwreck of the Sea Venture & the adventures of its castaways are said to have inspired this play

Brian was too animated for his own good. I can’t say being more chill would have won him the game, but, he looked like he was auditioning for… something.
I got FJ, despite never reading Dumas (Père ou fils). Don’t tell the ghosts of my French instructors!
Oh my, Brian went up and down faster than the elevators in the Empire State Building. It was dizzying at times. That 3rd DD was tough, I just happened to know of it. FJ had to be one of the easiest ever. The French names were a handout on a silver platter.
Lindsey seemed mired in quicksand for much of the match. At least she finished DJ with a respectable score. I knew her state capital answer would be allowed after the break. Somehow the desired answer came to me right away.
Really, 3 smarties had no idea what makes French vanilla ice cream different, even given its color?
I know William Weyser would say darn those daily doubles to Brian.
It was another great game, and Greg remained as champion. As for FJ, I took a wild guess, and went with ‘Kings’. Say VJ, what has been going on with the Jeopardy telecasts for the last month or so? I mean, the telecasts keep getting cut off during various segments of the show, and I miss some of the clues when this happens. In fact, this has occurred in FJ too.
I don’t know Rick. You would have to check with your local station. Everyone has to deal with that now and then. As I have said before, if you miss FJ you can catch it on YouTube I don’t know what time zone you’re in. I think it’s usually up around 9 pm Central..
Tomorrow there will be a lot of preemptions!
I’m in the EST time zone, and this has occurred on the WKZO channel which is based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. These interruptions have happened both at my place (I use a roof antenna), and at my mother’s place (she has Xfinity).
Sounds like it’s the station causing the interruptions and not the way you get the show.
I can use YouTube TV or indoor antenna. So if the internet is down I can still watch it OTA. But if there’s breaking news, it’s tough luck.
You forgot to put that Lindsey had 400 after she had -1,200 because she was in the negative when we went into the second commercial break but before DJ! began she got out of the hole thanks to a reversal.
Okay, that’s fixed!
