Mikaela Shiffrin Sets New World Cup Ski Record, then Breaks it

Mikaela Shiffrin broke a tie with Lindsay Vonn for the most Alpine Skiing World Cup victories by a woman on January 24th, winning the first of two Giant Slalom races at San Viglio Di Marebbe, Italy, for career win #83. The record stood for just one day; Shiffrin won the second Giant Slalom on January 25th to set a new record of 84 wins. The overall record is 86 victories by Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark, whose career ran from 1974-1989. Stenmark feels the 27 year old Shiffrin will be the first to reach 100 victories. She has 10 wins so far this season.

Last year, Shiffrin did not win a medal at the Beijing Olympics, going 0-6 in one of the more shocking stories out of those games. But that was an aberration in her career; she finished the 2022 World Cup season as the overall champion for the fourth time. A fifth championship is within reach; she leads the standings with 1517 points, well ahead of second place Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland, who has 906 points.
