UCONN Wins Third Straight Women’s College Basketball Title
With all the hoopla surrounding the recently concluded men’s NCAA basketball tournament, the women’s basketball tournament sometimes gets lost in the shuffle. On April 7th, Connecticut and Notre Dame played for the women’s title in Tampa, Florida with the Huskies prevailing 63-53. It was UCONN’s third straight championship, and tenth overall, the most of any team. Tennessee is second with eight wins in thirteen appearances in the championship game. UCONN has never lost in the championship game.
All of UCONN’s titles have come with coach Geno Auriemma at the helm. These 10 titles matches the total of John Wooden, the legendary men’s coach at UCLA, who won his between 1964 and 1975. The Huskies finished 38-1; their only loss was at sixth ranked Stanford on November 17th when they dropped a two point decision in overtime, snapping a 47 game winning streak. A few years ago, the Huskies had a 90 game winning streak. Wow.
