San Francisco Giants Slide Continues with Loss at Colorado
Back at the time of the All-Star break in July, the San Francisco Giants looked like a lock for the post season. They were in 1st place in the National League West with a record of 57-33. Besides, they’ve been winning the World Series in even numbered years (2010, 2012, and 2014) so it looked like everything was on track.
Sometimes teams have a completely different second half of the season following the break. Sometimes a team gets itself together after a poor or mediocre first half, and makes a successful run to the post season. And then there are those situations where the wheels come off and a team finds itself struggling to make the post season after having a great first half. The Giants a falling into this category, and are in serious danger of not making the playoffs. After losing two of three to the Colorado Rockies, San Francisco fell to 17-32 since the All Star break and after completion of play on September 7th, were five games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the N. L. West, and just a half game in front of the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets in the Wild Card standings.
The Giants led the Rockies by two runs going into the ninth inning of their September 7th game, but three relievers couldn’t put Colorado away. Nolan Arenado hit his N.L leading 37th homer to lead off the inning, the Rockies loaded the bases with one out and pinch hitter Christhian Adames hit a two run double to give the Rockies a 6-5 win.
The Giants have 23 games left in the regular season, including six against the Dodgers, although catching them may be out of the question. San Francisco also has four left against the Cardinals on September 15-18, which will go a long way in determining if they’ll be playing in the post season.
