Oilers Extend Winning Streak to 14 Games with Win Over Blue Jackets
The Edmonton Oilers scored three times in the third period on the way to a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets in Edmonton on January 23rd. Connor McDavid, Evander Kane, Dylan Holloway, and Warren Foegele scored goals for Edmonton, and Kane and Foegele had assists as well. Stuart Skinner had 27 saves in goal.
The victory was the 14th in a row by Edmonton, three away from the NHL record 17 in a row by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1992-3 season. The Oilers improved to 27-15-1 (55 points) on the season, and were in third place in the Pacific Division behind Vancouver and Vegas, and sixth overall in the Western Division. If it seems like such a streak should put them higher in the standings, it should be remembered that the Oilers had a horrible start to the season, and were 5-12-1 on November 22nd. They are 22-3 since then. With 39 games left in the regular season, the Oilers have plenty of time to close the gap on the teams in front of them.
While Edmonton is known for having high scorers like McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers are also playing top notch defense. They’ve allowed two or fewer goals in their last 12 games, and haven’t allowed more than three since losing to Tampa Bay on December 14th.
