WHAT IS THE SURPRISE SYMPHONY?

According to Connolly Music’s post “Amazing Facts About Franz Joseph Haydn,” the Austrian composer was “well known throughout his life for being a good jokester. His String Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 33 is subtitled The Joke, because he inserted numerous false endings within each movement to catch audiences off-guard. His Symphony No. 94 is subtitled the Surprise. He had fun with the audience in this symphony by injecting sudden fortissimo chords into quiet passages to wake-up the snorers.”

Lindsay wrote down “Enigma.” She lost her $7,000 bet, leaving her with $1,200.

Ali got it right. He bet a big $13,001, winning the match with $26,401. His 2-day total is $46,802.

Congrats to ali once again on getting this right despite not getting the first daily double. I think Ali has the potential of being a streaker just like Andrew Haringer did. Also haydn had composed the clock symphony although I am not sure how many of you guys know it, John and VJ?

I think over the last few weeks, there has been a bunch of inexperienced players making too many bad guesses and having lack of knowledge in the subjects covered, don’t you guys agree? I am surprised tyler didn’t bet anything but I was hoping he would have known haydn.

Well, as I said: they both probably know Haydn, but this particular symphony is not even well known in Austria. When you have so many composers at the same time…… So double kudos to Ali!!

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I’m not exactly following you. I mean, isn’t the returning champ the only player you could call an experienced player? Every day, 2 players are on the stage for the very first time.

John knows far more about classical music than I do.

I was referring to the newcomers at the beginning of the week in June namely Jason and Jon Fassola, and Leslie of course. I hope that clarified the confusion since I only mentioned the ones that won only one game. You remember how badly they did on their daily doubles right? So I just hope that for the rest of June we hope to see players nailing dd’s.

        • VJ says:

@Lou, well, most of the time, I don’t remember exactly which clues were DDs very long but out of the 3 you mentioned, only Leslie had a second game and (looking it up) she didn’t get any of the DDs in her 2 games

        • timmeh says:

How much of an advantage do you think the returning champ has?

        • VJ says:

@timmeh, idk if you are asking me or Lou. As for me, I don’t really know how much of an advantage it is other than in terms of being more comfortable onstage than the new contestants and, of course, having had a whole game to get the hang of the buzzer. That’s a big plus, I think.

      • John B. says:

        @VJ
Thanks, but then I had the advantage of growing up in basically in the center of European classical music (except the French ,Polish and Russian composers of course). For me certain pieces just touch my soul, especially Mozart and Beethoven.

  2. John B. says:

    @ VJ and @JJ
    Congratulations!!!
The guy who finally made me right yesterday (even a triple correct prediction as to 1, who and Truman appearing), made you right today!! And I’m back to my dry spell!
Ali seems to be really sharp, despite missing his DD again (yesterday he missed both). But Lindsay (Enigma????) and Tyler obviously had no idea. Elgar wrote some “Surprise variations, but he was British and a couple centuries later… I don’t think she had him in mind?? As I said in the CotD even Austrians don’t know the “Paukenschlag Symphonie ” (lit. “Timpani Hit Symphony” ) as it is called in Austrian since they use a timpani or drum to “wake up” the audience . You have so many composers (Mozart, Beethoven, Bach,Schubert etc) that this Haydn work is even not that well known in Austria. Well, congrats to Ali as well, I am really surprised!! Good for him!! He just might be the one to win 4 or more games !
Just as a small additional info: a lot of resentment (and there is quite a bit, Austrians do not like Germans as much as you would think, except Bavarians, since they are a LOT like Austrians) by Austrians to Germans or Germany stems from the fact that Germany “stole” the old “Kaiserhymne” as their national anthem, under Hitler and now as well. When and IF Austria beats Germany in soccer it’s a federal holiday in Austria…..We shall see what tomorrow brings and have a nice day everybody!!!
