Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/17/2023) in the category “English Literature” was:

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS “PARADISE LOST”?
John Milton published his epic poem “Paradise Lost” in 1667. Written while he was blind, it is considered Milton’s greatest work. “Paradise Lost” tells the story of the rebellious angel, Satan’s battle with God, as well as the creation of Adam and Eve and their fall from grace. Satan, “the Prince of Darkness”, shows up in that part, too. Milton followed up the 10-book “Paradise Lost” epic with the 4-book poem “Paradise Regained”.
The quote in the clue comes from Satan’s speech in Book One of “Paradise Lost”, which also contains Satan’s most famous quote from the poem: “Better to reign in Hell than to serve in Heaven.”
Madeleine thought it was from “Canterbury Tales”. She lost $3,799 and finished with $1.00.
Toni came up with “Ode to the Portuguese”. She lost $1,000 and finished with $7,000.
Daniel got it right. He bet $7,201 and won the game with $16,001. Daniel Ciarrocchi is today’s Jeopardy! champion. Coincidentally, that was the same amount with which Ben Chan won his first game last Wednesday.
2 triple stumpers from the first round:

I knew FJ immediately, because I have a t-shirt with the first half of that phrase on it! Although my degree is a BS in biology, I also got a French minor, and had to take two upper level English classes. One was “Milton”. I really liked that class, and did really well in it, and the professor got me this t-shirt in town! One side has the quote, and the back has “VMI” on it! We were well known, in the local area, for being very mentally tough. It was “think or sink”, for sure.
As usual, got about half the TS correct.
$2,000 clues that should’ve been opened before the timer went off are “The 12th Century” and “Gods & Myths”. This happened in Double Jeopardy. Decent show today.
Actually, this is the fourth time that a reigning champion didn’t return. Today’s show was taped on February 7th during Ben’s illness. The last Friday’s show was aired on January 18th. J! Archive said that he will come back to the show to air it on the May 15th episode.
For future reference, “the Portuguese” was Robert Browning’s nickname for his wife, Elizabeth. As far as I know, he never wrote a poem addressing her as such, She wrote “Sonnets from the Portuguese”, which includes the famous “How do I love thee” sonnet
Thanks, VJ! I do so appreciate your research! This (apparently) little known fact was taught in every poetry or lit class in high schools and colleges all over the country in earlier days. Perhaps now a more elective class than mandatory(?) As respects Spoiler Talk, I think you and Jacob “wuz robbed”. I also wish Ben Chan a speedy recovery and congratulations to Daniel for his win.
Thanks, Sam. I do believe it’s true — they don’t teach much poetry in high school these days the way they used to in high school. My daughter’s English teacher told me they just do one unit on it so I guess they don’t cover much.
Fun Fact: we had three new players for the first time since the Season 37 premiere. Ben Chan became the fourth player to be unable to return immediately to defend their title having to return at a later date. First Priscilla Ball, Claudia Corriere, Zach Newkirk, and now Ben Chan.
