WHAT IS “ROOTS”?

“Roots” is a Alex Haley’s 1976 bestseller, subtitled “The Saga of an American Family”. Haley traces his roots back to the village of Juffure in the Gambia, where his ancestor Kunta Kinte was captured and brought to America on the slave ship, Lord Ligonier in the 18th century. Haley continues to tell Kunta’s story and traces his lineage throughout the 19th century and into the 20th. “Roots” was adapted to the small screen in an 8-part award-winning miniseries that debuted in January 1977. The last 7 chapters of the book were made into a sequel, “Roots: The Next Generation” that debuted in 1979.

I forgot there was a remake of the original miniseries in 2016. I was reminded by the 10-7-16 recap, when Kunta Kinte was the correct Final Jeopardy! response.

Cameron bet the farm and doubled his score to $12,800.

Steve bet $6,000 and finished with $17,800.

Josh bet $7,201 and won the game with $23,601. Josh Weikert is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Not that often we see all men or all women on the panel. Cameron made a decent comeback, but no way was he going to win after that cinch FJ.

Stumpers were nasty. Got the first DD right away, couldn’t think of the other two in the given time.

Some of those Song clues were ridiculous — pick a Beach Boys song with a singular word that “almost rhymes” with a plural word, then penalize the contestant for answering with the plural of the right word. Pick a lyric from the middle of a Taylor Swift song and expect the players to know it.

The rhyming Secretary of State was also a published poet. In his 20s, he was Abe Lincoln’s private secretary and he was in the room when Lincoln died.

J! not showing anywhere in my area. Basketball on the first channel, and NLL lacrosse on the alternate. And, not any late, 1am showing, either.

    But they ARE showing WoF!

  3. Kevin Cheng says:

You left off Cameron’s score going into FJ! but we did end the week with a clue that everyone got Final correct.
