WHAT IS THE U-2 SPY PLANE?

The first flight of the U-2 spy plane prototype took place on 8/1/1955 (per The Cold War Museum) The Office of the Historian’s article, U-2 Overflights and the Capture of Francis Gary Powers, 1960, explains when and why the U-2 spy plane was created. The U-2 flew at altitudes over 70,000 feet. It was believed it could fly over Soviet airspace undetected by radar. You may be surprised to learn that the Soviets knew about the planes before the 1960 May Day incident, when CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers’ U-2 was shot down by the KGB. With Powers’ capture, the Soviets had proof of U.S. spying.

The entire matter was extensively covered by the media, from Powers’ capture to his eventual exchange for Soviet spy, Rudolf Abel. In addition to many books and documentaries, Powers was portrayed by Lee Majors in 1976’s “The True Story of the U-2 Incident”; and by Austin Stowell in 2015’s “Bridge of Spies”.

Yungsheng bet it all and doubled his score to $6,400.

Hannah bet it all as well and doubled her score to $26,395.

David bet $7,601 and won the game with $26,401. So, it’s David Sibley who is headed to the semifinals.

What a bummer! I couldn’t come up with FJ.

Mad props to Hannah with the binnacle!! The stream, I’ve never heard of it.

I didn’t have a favorite today. I wanted any of them to win.

  2. Howard says:

Hannah’s daring, go-for-the-KO DD wager may have cost her an eventual win.
We read the O. Henry story in junior high. But a tough clue if you didn’t read or remember it.
Someone should have taken a shot at the nuclear testing state. There are really only two to choose from, and one was already taken and wrong.
May 1960 gave me FJ because I was young at the time, but remember it well. I was living in SoCal in 1977 when Gary Powers was killed in a helicopter accident while doing traffic reports for KNBC.

I got the FJ instantly. Yeah, I sure recall that incident. After reading the article the following Saturday morning which was plastered on the daily newspaper’s front page, my father told us: “You can’t believe this government for nothing”.

  4. VJ says:

Oh, I forgot to mention that the nickname of the U-2 is the Dragon Lady. I know that because I know one of the authors of “Remembering the Dragon Lady”, a collection of first-person memoirs from people connected to the U-2 in various capacities.

I’ve seen that Ferrer/Gabor movie and I’ve seen “O. Henry’s Full House” which is a film anthology of 5 O. Henry tales, including the Ransom tale that was a triple stumper today. Lee Aaker (Rusty from Rin Tin Tin) plays the kidnapped menace. I saw it on the Movies! TV network channel.
