Final Jeopardy: Americana (2-27-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (2/27/2018) in the category “Americana” was:

A 1931 story in the New Yorker said this “weighs 600,000,000 pounds (&) … contains 37,000,000 cubic feet”

New champ Maryann Penzvalto won $15,801 yesterday. In her second game, her challengers are: Paul Mitchell Kelleher, from Millington, NJ; and Amy Finkelstein, from Chicago, IL.

Round 1 Categories: Other Wonder Women – A French Preposition – Fuel Fossils – “X” in the City – Zero – Tolerance

Amy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “‘X’ in the City” under the $600 clue on the third pick of the round. She was in the lead with $400, $200 more than Maryann in second place. She bet the $1,000 allowance but drew a blank so she was WRONG.

Maryann finished in the lead with $7,000. Amy was second with $4,000 and Paul was last with $2,600.

Round 2 Categories: Giving You the Earth & the Moon – Rating Systems – The Federalist Papers – TV Spin-Offs – Literary Homes – How Are “Things”?

Maryann found the first Daily Double in “Federalist Papers” under the $1,600 clue on the 8th pick. She was in the lead with $8,200 now, $1,000 more than Amy in second place. She bet $3,000 and thought it was Executive Power. That was WRONG.

Paul found the last Daily Double in “Earth & Moon” under the $1,200 clue. There were 3 clues after it but we knew we weren’t gonna see them. In third place with $5,000, he had $4,600 less than Amy’s lead. He bet $600 and guessed plateaus. That was WRONG.

Maryann finished in the lead with $9,600. Amy was next with $6,400 and Paul was in third place with $4,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING?

If you have a paid subscription, you can find the New Yorker article online; however, The New Republic has a free 1931 article that mentions the 600,000,000 pounds and 37,000,000 cubic feet, among other interesting items. President Herbert Hoover switched on the lights from Washington, D.C. and N.Y. Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt was on hand to help with the May 1, 1931 opening. Ironically, in November 1932, a searchlight beacon shone from the Empire State Building tower for the first time to mark Roosevelt’s defeat of Hoover for the presidency.

This is actually the first FJ (per J-Archive) where the Empire State Building is the response. It was mentioned in the FJ clue in Lisa Schlitt’s 5th game (2/2/2017) and also in a 1/30/2007 game, with 3 strikeouts both times!

Paul got it right. He bet $4,300, bringing him up to $8,700.

Amy picked the Statue of Liberty. She lost her $6,300 bet, leaving her with $100.

Maryann got it right, too. She bet $3,201 so she won the game with $12,801. Her 2-day total is $28,602.

Final Jeopardy (2/27/2018) Maryann Penzvalto, Amy Finkelstein, Paul Mitchell Kelleher

LITERARY HOMES ($1000) In a Henry James novel, Catherine Sloper’s fictional home is on this real Manhattan square

Great to see the empire state building as the final jeopardy clue but the statue of liberty was not a bad guess. Still will we see a streak of wins from Maryann, VJ? Also when can we see daily double hits instead of missed ones?

When are we going to see all 61 clues without an end-of-round signal?

  3. VJ says:

Leave it to Alex to start out the show telling the audience that at the end of the game he and the players (at his instigation, no doubt) were talking about how yesterday game had such a “dismal” start. LOL!! That was a jinx because today’s scores were lower than yesterday, both pre and post FJ!

I thought of you, VJ and chuckled when Alex started his commentary at the beginning of the show. Paul was quiet for most of the first round, wasn’t he?

      • VJ says:

@Cece, yes, I was beginning to think Paul’s buzzer wasn’t working. He ended up getting his whole first round score from 3 clues out of the last 7.
