The Final Jeopardy question (2/26/2024) in the category “Art History” was:
The Royal Academy of Arts has this man’s “La Fornarina” & in the 1800s the RAA’s love of him made some artists retreat to an earlier style

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHO IS RAPHAEL?
I don’t know what the first part of the FJ clue is supposed to mean (The Royal Academy of Arts has this man’s “La Fornarina”). As I mentioned on Spoiler Talk, it reads like something was left out. The RAA does NOT have “La Fornarina”– it has an engraving by 18th c. printer Dominico Cunego. Raphael’s 16th c. painting is at Palazzo Barberini in Rome, where it is very popular likely due to the romantic legends attached to it.
The second part of the clue refers to the rejection by 18th c. artists of the Royal Academy’s idolization of Raphael, leading to the formation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. From Tate: “Its principal members were William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. After initial heavy opposition the Pre-Raphaelites became highly influential, with a second phase of the movement from about 1860, inspired particularly by the work of Rossetti, making major contribution to symbolism”
Ben came up with El Greco. He lost $4,399 and finished with $100.
Chris went with Boticelli. He bet and lost his whole $14,000.
Jared got it right. He didn’t bet anything, winning on the strength of his runaway. So it’s Jared Watson who’s heading to the semifinals. Congrats, Jared! That was one great second round for you.
2 triple stumpers from the last round:
DOUBLE THE SAME VOWEL ($400) Polartec pioneered this fabric perfect for sweaters & blankets, a synthetic material despite its sheep-ish name
LITERARY GROUPS ($2000) The early 20th Stratford-on-Odéon literary circle hung out at this bookstore run by Sylvia Beach in Paris’ Left Bank
2 years ago: ALL of the players got this FJ in “Historic European Families”
This family has been traced to the Mugello Valley around the year 1200 & the name suggests the trade of physician show

Crazy Coincidence: The John 15:13 quote ($600 clue in the New Testament category) showed up in “Greater Love”, a Gunsmoke episode featuring Claude Akins. (On the radio, it was John Dehner)
Cris started out like a house afire, but Jared hung in there.
Surprised no one picked up on that obvious “Marching to” hint in the Boer War clue. Also surprised that the losers got only $5K each which I think is what the ones who didn’t advance to the ToC also got. At least in the final rounds.
Saw something on the the “J!” Facebook page tonight about another tournament to follow, this one composed of “favorite” players from past decades, with the winner advancing to a new Masters tournament.
What happened to Cris? He went radio silent during the last 2/3 of the DJ round, until towards the very end. It didn’t look like he was struggling with the buzzer.
I read a story about an earthquake during taping, but I don’t know which episode it affected.
I had no clue on Final. I did look up the mentioned art, only to be surprised that it’s a topless woman!
I came up with Goya. Best I could do. The name of the artwork looked Spanish but also could have been Italian.
My wife has a BFA in art, so, she’d maybe probably know, but she goes to bed early.
But, me? Nuffum!!
It was a good game today, but none of us got the FJ right.
Well this was an upset as Cris Pannullo went home as Jared found all three daily doubles and dominated throughout the game. So we have two runaway quarterfinal games so far in this tournament.
