Final Jeopardy: International Sports (11-4-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/4/2015) in the category “International Sports” was:

Its name refers to safety efforts that currently restrict cylinder capacity & prohibit supercharging.

New champ Ryan Mewett got paid big time yesterday ($28,801), thanks in part to a very bold Daily Double bet. Maybe he will do that again today when he takes on these two players: Jenny Gu, from Toronto, Ont, Canada; and Sam Stubblefield, from Wilmington, DE.

Round 1: Sam found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Color Purple” under the $800 clue. He was in the lead with $4,600, $600 more than Ryan in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Sam finished in the lead with $8,800. Ryan was second with $6,200 and Jenny was last with $2,400. Before starting the next round, Jenny was awarded $1,200 on a reversal.* That brought her score up to $3,600.

*SPEAK “UP”! $600 – “To transfer data from a smaller device to a larger one.” Jenny’s “backup” response wasn’t accepted. Ryan’s “upload” was.

Round 2: Jenny found the first Daily Double in “Debut Novels” under the $1,200 clue. She was still in third place with $4,400, $8,400 less than Sam’s lead. She bet $1,400 and took a wild guess with Gloria Steinem. That was WRONG.

Her 1936 debut “We the Living” began a lifelong theme by attacking the evils of socialist collectivism. show

Sam found the last Daily Double in “E Commerce” (with the “E” in quotes) under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $16,000, he now had $4,200 more than Ryan in second place. He bet $4,500 and he was RIGHT.

Sam finished in the lead with $23,300. Ryan was next with $13,800 and Jenny was in third place with $6,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS FORMULA ONE?

According to the top answer on Quora, Formula One “essentially refers to a set of regulations that govern any of several forms of single-seater open wheeled motor sports…. “The most commonly known formula races are Formula One, Formula Two and Formula Three. Their formulae are so differentiated that makes Formula 1 the best performing cars…” Formula 1 Dictionary has a timeline of engine rule changes through the years showing current regulations.

Jenny didn’t have a response and she didn’t bet anything so she remained at $6,600.

Ryan got it right and he bet everything so he finished with $27,600.

Sam also got it right. His $4,301 bet brought him up to $27,601, a dollar more than Ryan and that makes him the new Jeopardy! champ.

Sam Stubblefield is a hospital pediatrician. During the chat, he talked about how his 4-year-old son, Drew, helped him train for Jeopardy! That kid has a bright future as a Jeopardy! coach.

    Knew someone wouldn’t get it.

another one that seemed hard, seemed less specific and even a lil bit vague than other fj’s

There was a $1000 clue March 17 this year with Formula One in it. Only it asked for the name of the city where the Grand Prix took place. I was surprised to see F. O. again so soon. Perhaps because that was considered Season 31 and this is Season 32. Who knows?

Anyway, I can say with certainty that Gloria Steinem authoring a book in 1936 would be an impossibility. Not sure of her age but she had to be practically a baby. I guess the contestant figured just come up with any name when she couldn’t think of Ayn Rand. :-[

Technically speaking, a turbocharger is a form of supercharging, so the correct answer to the Final Jeopardy question can’t be “Formula 1.” Formula 1 currently allows turbochargers.

37/58 here. They decided to accept Backup for the intended response Upload, in the $600 box in the speak “Up” category where each response started with the word “Up”(Alex only said “Up” would appear in each correct response, not specifically stating “Up” would start each response)

How did Jenny get credited $1,200? It was not before the Daily Double, it was just before the Double Jeopardy! round.

    • VJ says:

well, it says that, Dalton — “Before starting the next round, Jenny was awarded $1,200….” Then I show the clue that was reversed, then it shows the Round 2 DDs.

    • a says:

+600 to credit the wrong answer and +600 to credit the correct answer=1200

      • Dalton Higbee says:

VJ, I mean the First Daily Double of this game.

        • VJ says:

Dalton, all I can say is I usually put this info in when it comes up during the game, so I saw her finish the first round with $2,400. The clue was reversed after the commercial and she got another $1,200. Then DJ started.

J-Archive agrees if you look at the $600 clue in “Speak Up” — “Initially ruled incorrect; reversed before Double Jeopardy!”
