Named for a Spanish queen, this Pacific island chain was a starting point for famous explorations of 1960 & 2012

Santhosh found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Spoke” under the $1,000 on the 20th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $4,600, $2,600 more than Jen and Sarah tied in second place. Santhosh bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

WHAT ARE THE MARIANA ISLANDS?
In 1667, Spain formally claimed the Mariana Islands, naming them after Mariana of Austria, King Philip IV’s widow. She ruled Spain as Queen Regent for her then 6-year-old son, King Charles II. (The Caroline Islands are named after him.)
The Mariana Trench is located in the Pacific Ocean about 124 miles east of the Mariana Islands. Its lowest point, Challenger Deep, lies some 36,070 feet below sea level. The explorations referred to in today’s clue were, until 2019, the only manned trips to Challenger Deep. On 1/23/1960, Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard descended 35,814 feet on board the U.S. Navy’s bathyscaphe Trieste. On 3/26/2012, film director James Cameron descended 35,787 feet on board the DSV (deep-submergence vehicle) Deepsea Challenger. Learn about Victor Vescovo’s record-breaking 2019 trip on World Atlas.
Sarah thought it was the Antilles. That cost her $1,000 and left her with $6,000.
Santosh went with Isabella. He bet and lost his whole $9,400.
Jen also had Isabella. She only lost $1,050, winning the game with the remaining $14,050. Her 2-day total is $27,850.
2 triple stumpers from TREES & FLOWERS: (Please don’t put the answers in the comments)
($1600) Salix is the genus for this tree, a source for an acid used in pain relievers
($2000) Over 1,000 stigmas from this flower are necessary to get even a small amount of saffron seasoning
2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “LITERARY CHARACTERS”
In a later part of the epic named for him, this character becomes king after his cousin Heardred dies in battle show

Other than the last DD and a couple of stumpers, not my night (missed the show, just going by whatever’s in the recap). Decided quickly Isabella was the FJ answer but couldn’t think of any others. The melted cheese and the Berkshires festival were gettable. And I can see that Jen bet to lock out Sarah but not the other player. She seems to fear the third-place contestant and not the closer one. Weird.
As VJ said in the past, some players can sneak through like this, but go nowhere in the tournaments. This FJ was difficult for me. This is not endorsing “it was difficult because all three missed it”. I said “the Caroline Islands”. Although close in location, I just recapitulated that the Carolines are named after Charles II of Spain (King, not Queen). In the words of dear departed Alex, “Ooh, so close!”
Is there anyone who posts here who is fluent in French, or a BIG opera fan? The clue about Falke was about one of my most favorite operas, <>. It’s kinda weird how I know that word in 4 languages!
Maybe Monday will possibly provide contestants that know wagering strategy.
I put it in French quotes – <>. “Le Chauve-souris”!
yeah, Jason, I mentioned that in the recap — how the Caroline Islands are named after Mariana’s son Charles II. I got FJ thanks to remembering my own article on that part of the world.
Over the years, we have had a bunch of people who know French on here. There’s me and Rhonda. Howard has mentioned several times that he studied French for many years. Years ago, we had a big thing in the comments about Alex not correcting the mispronunciation of coup de grâce. lol.
Yesterday, I pronounced legerdemain a la français and was wondering if that would have been accepted.
Wow – and I thought I was insufferable!
I vaguely recall that game from 2015, because of FJ. I got that one correct! Didn’t remember anything else of it!
Your first sentence really made me laugh, Jason. Insufferable is putting it mildly. 🤣🤣🤣
That wasn’t even the end of it. (2 weeks later)
The old saw – “If you have to tell people you’re smart, you’re not.”
I also went with Isabella for FJ, but another great game to end the week.
We end the week with a triple stumper in the final thanks to that pesky geography clue.
For the second day in a row, Jen didn’t make the cover bet. Fortunately for her, Final Jeopardy was a triple stumper and that worked out well for Jen as she becomes a 2 day champion.
