Eagles and Chiefs Advance to Super Bowl LIX
Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts each scored three touchdowns to lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a 55-23 victory over the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship game on January 26th. Philadelphia will play in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years. In the AFC, those of you who are tired of the Kansas City Chiefs being in the Super Bowl will just have to wait another year at least. The Chiefs held off the Buffalo Bills 32-29 to win the AFC Championship and advance to the Super Bowl for the third straight season and fifth time in six years.
In Philadelphia, the Eagles set a record for most points in a conference championship game since the 1970 merger. Besides his three rushing touchdowns, Hurts also passed for another TD. But in a league where passing is surpassing the run game, the Eagles turned back the clock with seven rushing touchdowns (Will Shipley had the other one). The last time Washington allowed six or more rushing touchdowns in a game was the 1940 NFL Championship game against the Chicago Bears. The Bears scored six rushing TDs, one receiving touchdown, and three interceptions returned for touchdowns in a 73-0 rout. That is still the record for the most points in any NFL game. It could have been worse; the Bears missed four extra points.
It was a much closer affair in Kansas City. The Buffalo Bills and Chiefs met for the fourth time in five years in the playoffs, and third time in that stretch in the AFC Championship. Kansas City led 21-16 at the half, but Buffalo took the lead at 22-21 in the third quarter. Patrick Mahomes rushed 10 yards for a touchdown and passed for a two point conversion to give the Chiefs a 29-22 lead with 10:14 left in the fourth quarter. The Bills tied it at 29-29 on a Josh Allen to Curtis Samuel TD pass with 6:15 left. The Chiefs took the lead at 32-29 on a field goal with 3:33 left. On their next possession, the Bills made it to their 47 yard line. On a fourth down and five with 2:00 left, the Chiefs blitzed forcing Allen to lift a desperation pass downfield that Dalton Kincaid was could not haul in. Kansas City maintained possession of the ball the rest of the way and the Chiefs won their third straight AFC Championship.
The Eagles and Chiefs will meet in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years, with Kansas City winning Super Bowl LVII 38-35. This will be the fifth time Philadelphia has played in the Super Bowl; they are 1-3 overall, winning Super Bowl LII in February 2018 over the New England Patriots. The Chiefs are making their seventh appearance; they are 4-2 in their first six, winning Super Bowls IV, LIV, and the last two. If they can win this one, they’ll be the first team to win it three times in a row since the start of the Super Bowl era (1966 to today).
Super Bowl LIX is February 9th, 2025.
