Brewers Racing Sausage Guido Returned
For years now the Milwaukee Brewers have held a race of sausage mascots between halves of the sixth inning at home games in Miller Park. These races are a fan favorite and include five different seven foot tall sausages — Bratwurst, Hot Dog, Polish Sausage, Italian Sausage, and Chorizo. Here they are in action:
On February 16th, the costume for the Italian Sausage (the one in the chef’s hat), whose name is Guido, was stolen. That evening, the thief appeared in public in costume at two bars in suburban Cedarburg. The public was shocked at such a brazen act. A spokeswoman for the Klements Sausage Company, sponsors of the races and owners of the sausages, referred to it as “the wurst of times”. A mustard company offered cases of its products as a reward for Guido’s safe return.
Happily, the thieves had a change of heart. On the evening of February 27th, the perpetrators returned to one of the Cedarburg bars and dropped off the costume, told the bartender on duty that she “didn’t see anything” and ran out the door. Guido appeared to be none the wurst for wear.
Brewer’s fans would not relish the thought of watching the sausage races this season with Guido being a missing link. The races are highly competitive, and if one of the sausages gets off to a slow start, he’ll push hard to ketchup. Occasionally, one of the top heavy mascots will fall on his buns, but it’s all in good fun.
Is it lunch time yet?
