Kentucky Beats North Carolina 84-70; Wildcats Remain Undefeated
Kentucky’s top ranked basketball team received a jolt on December 11th when forward Alex Poythress was lost for the rest of the season after tearing his ACL in practice. The Wildcats had to face 21st ranked North Carolina on December 13th, not exactly the type of opponent one wants to face just after losing a key starter.
It turns out the Wildcats adjusted well. Kentucky got off to an early lead that was never relinquished as the Wildcats beat the Tar Heels 84-70 in Lexington. Willie Cauley-Stein and Devin Booker each scored 15 points and Poythress’ replacement, Trey Lyles, scored nine. Kentucky improved to 11-0 while North Carolina fell to 6-3.
The Wildcats’ next two games will also be good tests of how well they adjust to Poythress’ absence. Kentucky will play UCLA (8-2) in the inaugural CBS Sports Classic in Chicago on December 20th, and will follow that with a game at #4 Louisville (8-0) on December 27th.
