WHO IS SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE?

“Watchet harbour became the inspiration for the epic poem The Ancient Mariner by the romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In 1797 he walked over the Quantock Hills from his home in Nether Stowey, along with his friends William and Dorothy Wordsworth, and came upon Watchet. It has been said that looking down at the town from St. Decuman’s Church gave him the inspiration for his poem. . . . A seven-foot high effigy of the mariner was designed and created by sculptor Alan B. Herriot, of Penicuik, Scotland, cast by Powderhall Fine Art Foundries in Edinburgh and unveiled by Dr. Katherine Wyndham in 2003. (LoveWatchet.co.uk)

Dennis bet it all and brought his score up to $24,000.

    Second time in a row that a female contestant got eliminated just like what happened with Betsy Knudsen. What clues did anupama miss in this game, VJ? Also this response was used in.a similar final jeopardy game a few years ago.

    • VJ says:

      I thought this was great — a whole Victor Hugo category without one clue on Les Miserables. It was also cool that Ivan gave the French title for the Hunchback clue which was, of course, accepted.

      @Lou, I don’t keep track of what any particular player gets or doesn’t get. You can find that out when the game goes up on J-Archive.

        Thanks very much, I remember that the fj category poetic inspirations had this response of coleridge. What are some of the other poems that coleridge wrote aside from the ancient mariner, VJ?

        • VJ says:

          Oh, he wrote a whole bunch of poems. The Literature Network has some of them. The most famous I guess, after Mariner, are Kubla Khan and Christabel, I’m not sure he finished either of those. The Ancient Mariner is indeed my favorite —

          An orphan’s curse would drag to Hell
          A spirit from on high;
          But oh! more horrible than that
          Is a curse in a dead man’s eye!
