Final Jeopardy: Comic Books (9-21-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/21/2017) in the category “Comic Books” was:

Told to create a character called this, Len Wein learned the real animal is short, hairy & will attack an enemy 10 times its size.

2x champ Betsy Knudson has now won $38,601. In her third game, her challengers are: Diane Esemplare, from Riverdale, NJ; and Thom Page, from Auburn, ME.

Round 1 Categories: The World Factbook Says… – The Colors of Music – Other Holidays & Observances – “D” in American History – Exercise – Speaking German

Betsy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Speaking German” under the $1,000 clue, with 9 clues left after it. She was in the lead with $5,000, $2,000 more than Diane in second place. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

Your knowledge of opera might help with this one: it’s the German word for “bat” (the flying kind) show

Betsy and Diane finished in a tie for the lead with $5,600 each. Thom was next with $2,400.

Round 2 Categories: We Need to Talk About Kelvin – One-named Authors – Opus Day – Not Their First Rodeo – Dramatic TV Drama! – See “Span”

Betsy found the first Daily Double in “Dramatic TV Drama!” under the $1,200 clue on the 16th pick. She was in the lead with $9,200 at this point, $1,200 more than Diane in second place. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

Pandora’s Box was nothing but trouble for Abbie on this Fox drama & Ichabod would mourn her shocking loss. show

Boo hoo! They didn’t get to the last Daily Double. There was a $400 clue in “See ‘Span'” left but it was probably under one of the last 2 clues in the “Kelvin” category

Betsy finished in the lead with $16,600. Diane was next with $10,400 and Thom was in third place with $6,400. A reversal came after the break (see below) that affected Betsy and Diane and their scores rose to $17,800 and $12,800 respectively.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS WOLVERINE?

From Gizmodo: The Secret Origin of Wolverine: “Despite being best-known as a member of the always-uncanny X-Men, Woverine actually started life as an antagonist for the Hulk in 1974’s Incredible Hulk #180. Created by Hulk writer Len Wein and Marvel’s art director, John Romita, the character was less a moment of divine inspiration than the much-discussed solution to the problem of how to help break the Canadian market; then-editor in chief Roy Thomas had asked Wein to come up with a new Canadian character, and he’d already come up with two possible names: Badger and Wolverine, both animals that lived in both the US and Canada. (“Wolverine” was chosen because it sounded close to “wolf” – much to the relief of Mike Baron, who’d go on to create a comic character called Badger eight years later.)”

Thom thought it was the Badger. That cost him $5,000 bet, leaving him with $1,400.

Diane wrote down “weasel.” She lost her $12,000 bet and finished with $800.

Betsy got it right. She bet $5,001 so she won this one with $22,801. Her 3-day total is $61,402.

Final Jeopardy (9/21/2017) Betsy Knudson, Thom Page, Diane Esemplare

REVERSAL: WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KELVIN ($1200) Kelvin was the driving force in the laying of the Transatlantic one of these in 1866 – This was the last clue they got to in DJ. Diane rang in and said “phone line” but changed to “cable.” Seemed quick enough to us but it was rejected. Betsy said “What is a telephone cable.” Alex said “Nope. The correct response is “What is a telegraph cable.” After the break, Alex said that the judges decided that Diane got in “cable” in time after slow-mo playback. She got $2,400 and Betsy got $1,200.

A triple stumper from each round:

OTHER HOLIDAYS & OBSERVANCES ($1000) (2 unfittable lines precede) / This day’s on May 12th / I like it, myself/ & now it’s on you to speak up

ONE-NAMED AUTHORS ($1,200) This Roman poet’s “Art of Love” from around 1 B.C. is a hedonistic seduction manual still useful today

Well another clean sweep from Betsy, and also VJ are your kids fans of the X-Men comics and any of the X-Men cartoons? I remember in Seth Wilson’s second game, his opponent guessed goku as the answer to.final jeopardy instead of Godzilla so this game has some similarity here. But still though I thought all the contestants are avid comic book readers.

VJ, would you be able to provide the first 5 clues of today’s game? I got preoccupied and forgot to turn on the tv!

    • VJ says:

Sure, Rhonda, Diane switched categories after the first clue, then they did that whole category so I might as well throw in the 6th clue, too:

The Colors of Music: ($200) Van Morrison: “_____ Eyed Girl” (Thom)

($400) John Mellancamp: “_____ Houses” (Thom)

($600) Chris DeBurgh: “The Lady in _____ (Diane and she was wearing the color, too)

      ($800) R.E.M.: “_____ Crush” (Diane)
