Final Jeopardy: Cable TV History (2-5-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (2/2/2018) in the category “Cable TV History” was:

New champ Jenny Rhodes won $11,899 last Friday, when she defeated 4x champ Ryan Fenster. In her second game, she is up against these two players: Sean Udicious, from Cherry Hill, NJ; and Lorie Gasior, from Gonzales, LA.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE WEATHER CHANNEL?

In 1986, “You need us” was the first slogan The Weather Channel used in its first major ad campaign, after 4 years on the air and a very cloudy forecast for its on-air future. Since then, TWC has had several slogans, including “No Place on Earth Has Better Weather” (1991-96), “Live By It,” (2001-05), “Bringing Weather to Life” (2005–08). and beginning in 2013, “Weather All The Time” and “It’s Amazing Out There.” The Chant took a look at The Weather Channel Through History in May 2017. That’s about the only article I saw today that wasn’t just a reprint of Wikipedia’s History of the Weather Channel.

Jenny was going for Univision. She lost her $111 bet and finished with $1,889.

Lorie came up with the History Channel. She bet nothing so she remained at $7,400.

Sean thought it was QVC. He lost $2,400, winning the match with an even $20,000. Sean Udicious (sounds like judicious, as pointed out in the chat) is the new Jeopardy! champ.

None of these contestants got the weather channel? Seriously what are they watching on tv nowadays, VJ? Also you and I can rely on that weather channel to go to places on a regular basis but still this was the easiest final jeopardy ever. I have gotten this in a heartbeat and won the game, wouldn’t you agree? Still, congrats to sean on winning big.

I missed the boat on this one myself, Lou. I have a little bookmark for a weather plus my zipcode search and that shows me the little 5-day thing. That’s about the extent of my looking at the weather. I did buy this indoor/outdoor thermometer last year that I thought was the cat’s pajamas, but the dumb thing doesn’t work.

Very nice, nowadays I think people have weather apps for their smartphone now when they travel or commute to work. Also Vj, you did have cable tv back then right with channels like QVC, The wb and so forth? Did you commute to work on a daily basis back then and checked on the new channels for weather reports of delays or cancellations? My parents do that a lot while they worked. To be honest, I think if we still had cable then well the weather channel would be a big thing but thanks to the smartphone, the weather channel is not needed.

Yes, Lou, I had cable back in the day and I still have it. For the most part, I just look at the 5-day forecast.
