WHAT IS THE HERMITAGE?

Shortly before resigning as a Superior Court judge in Tennessee, Andrew Jackson purchased the property that became the Hermitage on July 5, 1804 from one Nathaniel Hays for $3,400. On Who2.com’s list of 10 Things You Didn’t Know about the Hermitage No. 2 says no one knows why Jackson changed the name from Rural Retreat, but he was far from the first to take a liking to the name “Hermitage.” On Wikipedia’s Hermitage disambiguation page, there are several that predate Jackson’s final choice of a name for his home.

See OurWhiteHouse.org for a state-by-state list of presidential birthplaces, houses and libraries.

Sarah thought it was Peacefield, home of the Adamses. She bet and lost it all.

Ami got it right. Her $4,399 bet brought her up to $8,799.

Kevin got it right, too. He bet $800, bringing him up to an even $16,000 as he became the new Jeopardy! champ.

I was happy that they got to all the Daily Doubles today!

Me too, mimsy. I’m always happy when they get to all the Daily Doubles. Couldn’t figure out what slowed them down yesterday.

I was hoping that ami would have won her second game but since we are almost ending 2017, let’s hope there is a four or five time winner in January 2018, VJ. Also, how did these guys not know the second lightest abundant element, VJ? If they were chemistry majors, I can understand. Plus which other presidents have resided in the heritage after their presidency ended?

@Lou, I didn’t link directly to the Hermitage website in the recap because the fellow who wrote the 10 Things post did and I thought his list was interesting. He had just visited there and it reflects his immediate impressions. Anyhow, on the Hermitage site, the curator has a post telling how Jackson’s son, AJ, Jr., inherited the home, squandered his inheritance and sold the Hermitage to the State of Tennessee. All very interesting, with pictures.

The players seemed to be more afraid of the Hip Hop & R&B category than the Ernest one, though I think they probably would have made out better if they stayed with it.

I was sad to see that the popularity of “Sixteen Tons,” a genuine classic, has waned to that extent. Boo hoo!
