Final Jeopardy: Theatre (11-14-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/14/2017) in the category “Theatre” was:

Despite objections from the playwright’s estate, a 1991 French production of this 1952 play had a small all-female cast instead of male.

Semi-Final No. 2 of the 2017 Tournament of Champions is on! This match features all Quarter-Final winners: Buzzy Cohen (QF #1). Jason Sterlacci (QF #2), and Lisa Schlitt, (QF #4).

Buzzy found the last Daily Double in “Widows in the Bible” under the $800 clue. There were two $400 clues left after it. In the lead with $17,800, he had $2,400 more than Jason in second place. He bet $2,000 and picked Esther. That was WRONG.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “WAITING FOR GODOT”?

In “Damned to Fame: The Life of Samuel Beckett,” author Robert Knowlson describes how the conflict between acting companies seeking to cast women in the play began in the 1980s, while the playwright was still alive and very vehemently making his wishes known. In 1988, he sued a Dutch theatre company, De Haarlemse Toneelschuur, to stop an all-female production but lost. He then banned production of all his works in the Netherlands. Beckett died in 1989, the Dutch ban was overturned, but his estate continued to try to honor his wishes. They lost court challenges in France in 1991 and in Italy in 2006.

Lisa didn’t get a response in. She bet and lost it all.

Jason came up with “Peter Pan.” He bet everything but a dollar and that’s what he had left.

Buzzy got it right. He bet $15,401 and won the second Finals spot with a very robust $31,601. So Buzzy is joining Austin in the Finals, and Trebek will have to deal with “Mr. Personality” on Thursday and Friday, too!

Tomorrow, we will find out who will occupy the third spot. Will it be Alan, Pranjal or Tim?

I am kind of Austin ed OUT! Sorry. I think we have seen enough. He is well off now to travel and see more interesting things. His mind is like a photo bucket and I sure wish I had that.. 🙂 time to shine the spot light else where. I was hoping for a “woman win”- I really liked Lily. She was sharp as a tack. Sorry about Lisa. Sometimes the categories are not as familiar to us as others. I see no poor sports here. Just extremely intelligent people. Love Jeopardy SO much. Penny

  2. Sally says:

I have never seen such poor sports as Lisa and Jason. If you can’t lose with grace and dignity then stay at home. Grow up.

    • mimsy says:

I don’t agree they were poor sports at all. Lisa was upset and after Alex congratulated Buzzy, he went over to make her feel better and Jason turned around and shook hands with Buzzy. That’s the way I saw it.

  3. VJ says:

The $200 clue in “Widows in the Bible” reminded me of yesterday’s FJ —

($200) The widow Phinehas had a baby named this, also a character in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”

Like yesterday, when they only had to know the folk tale to get it, they didn’t need to know anything about the Bible to get this . ( I would have loved it if someone had said Abraham, though– Brom Bones’ real name)

  4. Lou says:

Waiting for godot is based on a novel just like the odyssey by homer and Romeo and Juliet since paul sorvino played Mr capulet, are you.A fan of theater plays or say Broadway musicals, VJ? If so which ones are your favorites?

  5. Richard Corliss says:

    And then there were 5

  6. Dalton Higbee says:

Hoping for a rematch between Austin Rogers and Alan Lin, but the rematch between Buzzy Cohen and Andrew Pau will not happen.

  7. EricS says:

Horrible wager by Jason. Lisa, you will be missed.
Didn’t (almost) everyone want to see Austin vs. Buzzy?

    • Dalton Higbee says:

Yes, Eric. Looking forward to seeing an Austin vs. Buzzy showdown in the finals.

    • VJ says:

Well, I was kinda hoping it would be Buzzy, Jason and Tim or Alan. The way it is now, if Alan wins tomorrow, he already kicked Austin’s butt on the buzzer in their QF and Buzzy beat Pranjal in their QF. I’m just sayin’ — I know that doesn’t necessarily means that it will turn out the same way in the 2-day finals. But the way I’m seeing it now, Austin will need a big DD boost to win against Buzzy and Alan.
